Does anybody know if there are other public school contracts for Gyeonggi-do aside from GEPIK? I'm signing for another year (in Gyeonggi-do), but will be moving to a different school... so I'm just curious if GEPIK is my only choice when wanting to stay with the public school system.

Thanks

GEPIK as a program is NOT the only choice. You can contract separately with a school within the province

BUT

in the end they are still governed by the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education.

So then does that mean that the contracts would be the same between GEPIK and another choice? I was reading over the GEPIK contract this evening and found some things that I wasn't too happy about (go figure huh?). One, being the fact that I would have to attend a 5 day orientation even though I attended a 10 day orientation with EPIK once already. (I was placed in Gyeonggi-do through EPIK... thus I am under the stipulations of an EPIK contract and not GEPIK) The second, being something about having a 300,000W pay deduction for the first 3 months for some sort of housing deposit.

Damn... if it wasn't for living in Kim Jeong Il's backyard I'd just stay where I am now where the money is great and the work load is more than fair.

If you have worked in Korea as a public school teacher you wouldn't have to attend the orientation again unless you specifically went through GEPIK.

If you contract with a school directly (NOT through GEPIK) - everything else is negotiable within the limits of the GPOE including salary, deposits, housing, etc.

I got a job in Gyeonggi directly through the school rather than through GEPIK but the contract which is used is the GEPIK contract and I am treated as part of GEPIK.

So far as the Orientation goes it seens come down to whether your school is prepared to try and put a case that you not be required to attend ... There is an orientation for us next week and some experienced people have been told by their schools that they must attend and others have said that their school has negotiated for them not to have to attend.

The Deposit clause has been a standard part of the Gyeonggi contract since earlier this year and is now a part of mine. I decided I could live with it ... I liked other aspects of the contract and felt safer having a deposit clause with a public school than with a hagwan. My alternative would have been not working in the public school. But that was my choice for me ... you need to make your own decision for you.

Maybe you should bring a SMOE contract with you to see if they can match or beat that.

Speaking of SMOE, what are the odds of landing a decent job with them, with 1 year experience (outside of Seoul)? I had considered them in the past, but didn't follow through with a contract due to a number of reasons. One reason was because at the time I considered Seoul to be the major English "hub" for Koreans, and thought, with no teaching experience, I didn't quite possess the quality of teaching most teachers have in Seoul. However, going on a year of living in Korea now (and meeting various "teachers"), I'm beginning to wonder if my assumptions were even close to accurate.

You should have no problem getting a job with SMOE/ETIS if that is what you want.
