I'm hoping to head to the Phillipines in July. I've been told that Boracay and Puerto Galera are probably the best places to go. If you have been to both could you tell me which one you would recommend. Just looking for nice beaches to chill out at and a few nice bars. Not really interested in diving.

Thanks

Boracay is much better in my opinion - bigger beach, better hotels/restaurants, and more leisure activities. Puerto Galera is ok for diving, but there are a lot of prostitutes there. If that's your thing, Puerto Galera would be better.

Go to Boracay. PG does not have a beach near many resorts/hotels/restaurants. You can take a boat to a decent beach, but in the Sabang area (most of accommodation) there is almost no beach. It is really only a dive destination. Boracay, from what I understand, is ALL beach.

PG is for fat old men and young prostitutes. The diving is OK too.

Boracay is OK for diving, has an OK nightlife and is a much younger crowd. It is isolated and there are NO towns of any size on the island so there is not much else other than drinking and beach activities.

The island is 7km long and White Beach is 3.5km of that. Most of the boats to the island (from the Caticlan airport) will drop you at boat station 2 located in the middle of White Beach. If you catch a flight to Kalibo you will have a 2 hour van ride to the boat dock at Caticlan.

Touts on the beach are also a major bother some days. I did like/do like Boracay, have been there many times and would return without hesitation.

There is also great diving around Bohol ( http://www.bohol.ph ). You have Alona beach for your down time and a bit of night life as well as going into Tagbilaran for shopping and something other than the beach. It is a much larger island and there is also sightseeing for activities to get off the beach. You can also catch a day trip to other close-by islands for more diving and adventure.
