So, it has been about two weeks since the last time I talked to my evil boss lady. I have put in my notice at work and have been waiting it out. I actually had been enjoying the kids and my co-workers have been nice since I resigned. We have open class in two weeks, where the parents come and watch our classes. I had a demonstration, and I thought it went well. There were points that could have been better and some things I need to work on, but I was proud of how I did.
And then today my boss decides to tell me that the hogwan can't trust how I will act on the open class and has decided to tell me that they will punish me with monetary fines if anything goes wrong in the last two weeks that I am at the school. First, they will take away my deposit, and then my last paycheck unless I do four things. The things I have to do are small, and no big deal. I actually don't mind doing them, and would have been happy to if my boss had approached me in a differnt manner.
It makes me so upset that a school is treating me in this manner. Why do they think they can completly de-moralize a person?
And the worst part is that my co-worker, who is admitly Bourgisie, and a non-native English speaker, has to agree with everything that the hogwon says. He says that the hogwan can not pay me because I broke the contract first by resigning.
I want to stay in Korea and teach again at the end of this, although not at a hogwon. I want to come back and get a job at the end of June, but I'm not sure if this is feasible anymore. I have a personal reason to stay (serious boyfriend). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. |

1- penalties as they have threatened are 100% illegal. Labor will back your case.
2- Illegal. Labor will spank them.
3- Illegal. Labor will spank them.
4- Irrelevant that they are small things... she can't just keep your money
5- He's an idiot. Did you comply with the contract's termination notice? Yes. So you have kept to the terms of the contract. It's not like you pulled a runner.
If the boss touches ONE won she is not entitles to, go to Labor and file. |

My co-worker has been extremly insistent that it is a favor that the school is doing in giving me back my deposit. He has worked at hogwans for three years now. Is he dumber than I previously imagined? |

He is dumber than a post and has no clue about Korean labor law or his rights as a worker. Is he Korean or an illegal?
Go to labor if you have ANY problems at all collecting even 10 won that is owed to you. Call them (dial 1350 and press 7 for English service).
And while you are pissing in their cornflakes, file complaints with the pension office and NHIC because I am sure you were screwed there too. |

My co-worker is French. Very, very, very French. No offense meant to French people, but I hate your snobby middle class. |

Unless your co-worker is married to a Korean, you can really pee in her cornflakes.
Labor,
Pension,
Medical
Immigration....
Don't be shy... call your favorite government office as soon as she makes any noise. Heck, call all 4 of them. If you are worried, PM me and I will do it for you. I have no problem peeing in some sleezy hakwon owner's cornflakes.
They will give her something to really worry about and she will probably forget all about levying illegal fines against you.

Resigning is NOT breaking the contract. If that co-teacher is really French (as in FRANCE) then they can't legally teach English on an E2 Visa. Immigration might like to know something about him/her.

Figures. They can't do that. Slam them at Labor. |

Thanks for all the advice. Sometimes I feel like a whiny brat when I write on this board. I think that this whole hogwon experience has been enlightening in several aspects. It has given me more reasons to hate the marriage of capitalism and education...
I'm worried about the repurcussions of this on getting a decent job here in Korea. Has there any way that this school can prevent me from getting another job here in Korea? I have heard that they can prevent me from getting a job. Is that just hot air from the hogwon?
It amazes me that parents send their children to 'schools' where any person with a degree can walk in the door.
I really, really want to post the school here, but instead have choosen to put it up on various other blacklists. |

Its complete BS unless they can get you in trouble legally. I left my first two jobs here on bad terms with my employers and got a very good third job no problem where I've been working at over two years now.
Also if you're in Korea and have a little experience you'll definately have more bargaining power than a newbie overseas and can probably get something good. |
