I teach a first and second grade afterschool class and I'm running out of ideas quickly. We sing songs from a tape my co-teacher gave me but I am refusing to use that because the students are quickly losing interest in that tape. I just introduced them to hangman yesterday and they seem to love it, though I'm not sure if I can play hangman for the entire 40 min. We also play simon says, but the students are getting bored with that too.
I bought a bag of chocolates yesterday to keep them motivated in the games . I don't have much experience with kids and I'm running out of ideas really fast. It also seems like I'm one of the few teachers that teaches 1-2 grade classes. It's not really teaching...it's more like playtime and babysittin. I'd appreciate any and all advice.. |

Days of the week. Months. Rhyming words. Ordinal numbers. Animals. Occupations. Methods of transportation. Feelings. Action words. Phonics. Very big numbers. Places to visit. Weather. Seasons.
Just a few things I thought of in 1 minute. |

A matching game.
I am assuming you are teaching 1st and 2nd Grade Elementary students.
Matching Game.
Make or print out flash cards for the vocab you want to practise.
E.g numbers.
Make two sets of cards. One with the numbers in letters and one with the numbers on in figures.
Practise until they can put the right number word and figure together. Then lay the cards face down on the floor. Ss have take it turns to try to find the matching number and number word.
Whiteboard game:
Students are split into two teams.
Teacher says a word or writes it on the baord. The first team to draw the correct picture to illustrate that word wins a point.
The Eraser Game
Teacher writes the target vocab all over the board. Each team has an eraser. Teacher shouts out a word, the teams have to be the first to find the word and erase it.

Be progressive.
Start off with animals. This is cat. Later, do colors. This is a white cat. Then, adjectives. This is a cute white cat.
The following week do verbs. The cute white cat is walking. The cute white isn't running. And you can continue with the is and isn't. It is a cute white cat. It isn't a scary brown dog.
The next week do prepositions. The cute white cat is walking next to the scary brown dog. The cute white cat is behind the little green frog.
Download some free pictures off the internet and use them as flash cards. They are great. Find a color printer.
Also write your own stories after two weeks based on everything you taught them. And, have students write their own stories. You can correct them and they go write a final draft. Then, they have to read them to the class on a Friday. Thats one day you dont have to speak too much. Get the students speaking more and listening to each other.
Have a writing day. I do writing on Wednesday. As long as I provide three to five examples of my short stories on Monday and Tuesday and go over the writing process on Wednesday, they usually dont have a problem. Ten sentence stories. But they need your vocabulary so keep on introducing it and reinforcing it.
I teach three second graders in my beginner class. I am often surprised that they know more vocabulary than their sixth grader classmates. For example, I asked a second grader, "what do you want to be (occupation)?" and she said "I want to be a judge." |
