I've had my ARC card for two months now and I want my degree back. No I am not doing a runner, but it cost me 90 dollars and I want it back. My owner could not give a *beep* less and is "very busy these days". So can I just walk in there and get it back?

Twisted Evil Sit in the director's office until they give it back! Had to sit and wait four hours one time to ge mine back! It's yours and they can't keep it as ransom.

Be polite, but firm. Good ploy is to wait when the doors first open in the morning, or wait until the school is just about ready to close for the night.

It is a hagwon, right?

Yes. It's yours. If they refuse, call the police. It's YOUR PROPERTY.

Yeah, I agree apply more pressure on them. There are several threads in this forum and the General Discussion about letting employers have your degree and/or passport. The newbies need to wise up and listen to those on this board who have been around awhile.

If the employer needs your passport to go to immigration that's fine, but don't let them keep it. Same with your degree.

Immigration doesn't have your degree your hagwon owner does.
She's probably holding onto it because that is what she has been advised to do by other hagwon owners to prevent you from doing a runner.
It's your legal property, so ask her for it back.

After two months, if your director said that immigration has your degree, she's definitely lying to you. Immigration doesn't need it to get your ARC if you already have your E-2 visa in your passport. So yeah, basically she's lying. Apply a lot more pressure. Tell her that if she can't "find" it by the end of the day, you'd like to have the hundred bucks cash so you can get a new one. That might help her look. Smile

Better yet, tell her it took you $60,000 to earn your degree and it's irreplaceable where your university does not print duplicate originals. So she owes you $60,000.

Absolutely. The degree is handed back once the visa issuance number has been given. Once they give you the visa number for your visa run, there is no need for them to have your degree anymore. Your boss is lying.

I wouldn't try to make a scene of having a sit-in protest until you get your degree back. This happened to me my first year. Instead, all I did was ask and ask and ask at every moment that I could, lunch time, dinner time, morning, passing periods, etc:

Wonjang: Hi Merk.

Me: Hi, how are you?

Wonjang: I'm fine thank you. And you?

Me: Okay. Umm, just want to remind you that I will need my degree.

Nice, polite, persistent yet subtlely obnoxious reminders ought to do the trick. If he asks "why," answer his question with a "why" question of your own:

Wonjang: Why do you need it?

Me: Why do you need to keep it?

He eventually caved in. No fuss. Worked for me.

You CANNOT go to immigration to get your degree back. They DON'T have it - YOUR HAKWON does.

Sit at your desk, call them thieves and refuse to work until you get it back.

If they hand you any line about the education office or something, they are LIARS as well.

The only reason they hold it is to prevent you from leaving without notice.

Nope. They return it within 15 minutes of the hakwon making the application. Your boss had it when she left the immigration office.

I've never allowed my shools to do the application (except the first job). I've always done it myself. They gave the degree back to me when they gave me my blue paper/visa number.
