How would you transfer files from a laptop to a desktop?
My wife needs to move about 20GB of video from her small laptop HDD to my larger desktop HDD. Her laptop has USB and Firewire connections. I tried both but XP doesn't seem to recognize a connection using those cables.
We can do it through the virtual wireless network but it's painfully slow. About 20 mins per GB.
Any ideas? |

Cross over cable, network card to network card.
Takes about 5 minutes to set up and about 30 minutes to transfer the data (assuming both computers have 10/100 NIC cards).
Cable cost is about 3000 won.
Pick it up an any department store (computer department), computer shop or Yongsan if you are REALLY close (not worth a special trip just to save 300 won over the department store price).
Alternatively, do it via your wireless network at night when you are sleeping. 400 minutes or so (6:40) sounds like an average night's sleep to me.
Cost is free, no cable required. |

External Harddrive - it'll take a while to transfer to it and then awhile again to transfer off it to the new computer. I would recommend if you do this to use Acronis True Image and make an image file of the folder(s) that you want to move - this will be compressed and smaller to move. Then move it to the new computer and decompress using true image again.
of course the cross-over cable is an option, but you'll have to buy it rather than just downloading some software. |

ummm....
price of cross over cable 3000 won.
price of external HDD 100,000 won.
I think the cross over cable is a much cheaper option.
He is swapping files from a laptop to a tower.
IF I somehow misread the Original Post, please forgive me but I didn't see an external HDD listed in his list of hardware. |

Yes, but almost everyone I know owns an external drive. I was just listing it as an option. |

I don't have an external HDD but I do have a PMP which could transfer about 20 gigs in about 20 minutes so that's an option.
Thanks for the ideas. |

It should work if you have a USB cable (that can be connected to 2 computers) :

Otherwise a cross cable is even better.
I think copying to an external HD, and then to other computer would take some time no? |

Most wireless hubs have ports in the back for regular network cables. If you don't have a crossover cable then just plug both computers into the hub with a regular cable. |
