One recruiter told me : "HAHAHAH NO PRETTY GIRLS ON ALL OF JEJU!"
Two days later - another one told me its known for stormy (my favorite) weather and hot women (yay!).
So I searched a lot all over the net, incuding here on daves esl padded room. I found this ah, person - who has a great interest in ah....young korean girls and "role playing fantasies" and um well......The school environments he videoed look very very nice and the kids do look calmer and less ugly than a lot of other teachers' clips of where/who they teach. Is there hope of a good life on Jeju?
I really need to get people that KNOW, not people that went there on a vacation. Logic would make me think that everything flown onto an isalnd is going to be expensive, but then again...logic, in Asia? Maybe not!
What is the story yonder? It seems I'd need transportation and it seems theres a city or two there. Is there a costco or Emart? I heard there's 3 foreign bars including New York Bar (holla!). I don't do bars really though. I think that the fact that their accent and dialect is so unique that its kind of useless off the island (like my own), is a drawback. What else can you tell me? I have several offers at once and its only going to increase in the next few weeks. I am aiming for arrival in end of august. |

Lived there for a year.
There's 2 emarts in Jeju City. Jeju City is big enough; 300,000 people.
Otherwise, its pretty countryside all over the island.
If you live in Jeju City, there are some buses... but IMHO even then, you'd be better off getting a car or at least a motor scooter.
Culture-wise, its about like the rest of Korea... Except I think the people on Jeju are a litte... errr..... claustrophobic? They seem to get into fights on the street and be somewhat more aggressive than people throughout the rest of the country I've seen. For example, since there are too many taxis in Jeju City, you commonly see taxi driver and people who they've cut off fighting it out in the street. Its just... a little more tense there... and its even more xenophobic and closed because its on a tiny island that is even somewhat peripheral to the rest of Korea.
On the other hand, the air is nice and clean, you can go to the beach 3 months out of the year to swim, there's good hiking, great views, not too many people... its a unique place for sure...
There arent more women there than there are in, say, Gangneung, Daegu, or Kunsan. Jeju has a University, so you might meet some women that way... and there are many hakwons so you might meet someone that way. However, you're faced more prominently with the xenophobia problem, I believe, so having something long-term might be harder....
Jeju is known for, "wind, women, and stones.' like, 70 years ago, all the men went away to fight ww2 or something so the island was left with an overpopulation of women. Now, there ARE a few more women, but they're all over 80! haha.. if youre into very older women, your set! Especially the "woman divers" who are some octagenerians who go diving for shell fish all around the island.
The weather totally sucks.. worse than the mainland. Always windy and even though the actual temp is warmer, it feels colder due to high humidity and wind. Rains every other day on average; or at least it did when I was there. There's like one time frame in late summer/early autumn thats pretty nice.
There's a rather large group of liberal/organic food-loving/transient/mostly Canadian expats in Jeju City who have a couple of regular expat bar hangouts... complete with K girl bar skank to boot and a terrible local band.
I would not even consider Jeju unless you're going to be in Jeju City.
Hope that gives you some info... |

jeju is a great place for a relaxing holiday but i wouldn't want to live there. to be honest it would just get boring after a while.
seogwipo seems ok but jeju city is nasty.. i found it surprisingly ugly, especially considering the rest of the island is so pretty. |
