Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
On Beauty by Zadie Smith
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon
Family Matters by Rohinton Minstry
Life of Pi by Yann Martel
City of God by E.L. Doctorow

These are among the 15-20 books on my summer reading bookshelf. Finished Ishiguro, am into Haddon, both are good but not among must-reads imo. Should have Garcia-Marquez on the list. Big oversight.

The Canadian must-reads are disappointing and show huge gaps and lazy bias. While I agree with one, two or three Margaret Atwood's, how can there be SIX (6) and none by Margaret Laurence? The Stone Angel is a must-read. It'll change the way you see old people, it's amazingly insightful and sticks in your head. And there's seven (7) by Saul Bellow but none by Gabrielle Roy. The Tin Flute is a must-read. It changed Quebec society, it was that powerful a novel. I can't imagine reading six or seven Bellow's before Roy (in translation).

All in all, the list is pretty good. It's not every day that I run down a long booklist without scoffing at a stinker or two (though I really didn't like A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving, I keep hearing how it turns others' crank).

I agree. The Tin Flute is a must read. So is Under the Ribs of Death by John Marlyn. And all Charles Dickens' books!
