Be VERY CAREFUL when you read the contract.
If you still want to sign with them after reading the contract then you should:
Talk to MORE THAN ONE of the foreign staff and ask POINTED AND SPECIFIC QUESTIONS (*when the boss is NOT listening over their shoulder) -e-mail is usually best.
1) What are the hours? (start time / stop time / breaks).
2) How many classes per day, week, month? NOT hour many hours per month. 30 classroom hours can mean anything from 1350 -1800 minutes per week standing in front of the class. The difference can be up to 7.5 HOURS in front of the class EACH WEEK.
3) Do they ALWAYS pay on time?
4) Do they pay at the end of your month or do they have a hold back period (5-10 days after your month end) to prevent runners? (no=red flag 1)
5) Do they really pay overtime or avoid it with creative book keeping?
6) Do you get credit for classes on the national holidays or do you get the day off but still have to work your 120 hours before you get overtime? (no=red flag 2)
7) Do they have national medical (with the little booklet)? (no=red flag 3)
Do they pay into pension? (no=red flag 4)
9) What about the holidays? 10 or more WORKING days? (legal requirement here) (no=red flag 5)
10) When and how do you get your holidays?
11) What extra stuff do you really have to do - mentioned or not in the contract.
12) Then consider the quality of life issues - things that are important to you that aren't mentioned here (housing, furnishings, THE BATHROOM, access to recreational facilities, shopping, banking).
13 Do they take additional deposits in addition to the delay in payday? (yes=red flag 6)

I asked to speak with the other teachers and she said that was fine...problem is its a new school, opening this summer, so no one has worked yet...the idea of a new school makes me extremely nervous...
I was hoping to get a feel of the franchise's history, if it was exemplary I might have considered it... |

newbie + new school = recipe for disaster.
Sign and you WILL regret it....

You have a very good point
I am a smart girl...I won't rush into signing anything, and I am passing on this offer, too many uncertainties. I have lots of time to find something more suitable.
Thank you for your advice. |

I have heard many bad things about LCI. There are probably some good locations but I wouldn't chance it. |

LCI Kidsclub is a franchise...
As such the only thing that matters is the school in question, not other LCI Kids Clubs.
My own personal Experience with Kid's Club was very excellent.
As with any school it will depend 100% on your director.
It's unfortunate that it is a new kids Club school so you don't have any teachers to speak to..
If I may ask where is the school? |

I had the pleasure of living with the guy who told me that he helped run their recruiting office in Halifax, Nova Scotia near the Halifax Shopping Centre. He got sacked from one of their schools in Suji that asked him to work for them for a bit as a favour.
Anyway, PM me for more info about three other franchises.

NEW SCHOOLS ARE VERY DISORGANIZED AND USUALLY DONT HAVE ENOUGH KIDS. KIDS CLUB HAS VERY LONG HOURS AND THE BOOKS THEY USE ARE BORING, HARD TO TEACH AND NOT WRITTEN/DEVELOPED BY A NATIVE SPEAKER. THE BIGGEST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE WAS TAKING A JOB FOR THIS COMPANY. I LAST 4 MONTHS AND LEFT B4 I SHOT MYSELF IN THE EYE. HOURS WERE 10-7 SOMETIMES LATER, PAY WAS LATE, DIRECTOR WAS VERY PICKY AND HAD NO IDEA HOW TO RUN A SCHOOL OR DEAL WITH FOREIGNERS. THE SUPERVISOR WAS A HORRIBLE PERSON WHOM I HATED WITH A PASSION BECAUSE EVERYTHING I DID WAS WRONG BUT I RECEIVED NO DIRECTION AS TO WHY IT WAS "WRONG" |

I would be concerned with a school that has NO reputation yet.
I don't think its nice to bash ANY of the franchises for their reputations since they are, for all intents and purposes, independent of one another (at least in my experience)
That said.. I don't think I'd be willing to risk a new school with no information on a year contract unless they were giving up a decent salary (2.2 or better) which is highly unlikely because they're new and untested and who knows how many students they have..
I suggest looking elsewhere just to be on the safe side... |

It's not even open, yet? Then how could a "current" teacher tell you it's "fine"? Sounds like BS. Stay away. |

I am into my ninth month with an LCI Kids Club. We dont have any problems with getting paid, however the overtime is a mystery to me.
I work 10-6pm with a few breaks.
We do so much BS for the mothers like reports, drama festival, speech contest, popsong contest. The books must be finished by certain times which means you either rush or drag them out.
Its a big school geared only towards making money and being a daycare center in the disguise of an english school.
The management is atrocious and the korean teachers take it squarely up the anus arriving at 8ish and finishing at 2ish, before staying intil 9ish making pictures and props and tacky junk to send home with the kids.
I hasnt been hell on earth but you do get tired of asking for pencils and glue every 6 weeks and being made to feel as if you have just insulted taeguki.
My advice is to look at your contract very carefully. get your hours specified, how long each class is, how many classes max, overtime rate and how long the overtime is (45? 60mins?). Also watch out for anything that talks about "activities" or "extra responsabilities". Basically just cover your ass when it comes to signing over your time.
I dont post a lot on Daves, but thought I should with this topic. Good luck. |
