I lived in 시티빌 in my first year here.

For those of you who can't read Korean, that's $hittyville.

Im sure you know this, but 제일 means "first." You see it in quite a few places.

So "best" means goofiest. Okay.

What's so funny about that one? There's Trump World Tower in NYC. Though it's unnecessary to put his name on any particular building. After all, it's Trump's world; we're just living in it.

There's no end to the bizarre & humorous names Koreans give their housing, though most cringeworthy are the "Ain't we rich!" ones. Richville, Richfield, and (gaah... the worst) Richensia.

Sadly, it's inevitable. It's a stage. Koreans just haven't been developed or wealthy enough, for a long enough period of time, to grasp what crude vulgarians they come off as in this regard. Well, in any regard. The nouveau riche here do not incur any of the (often healthy) scorn & contempt they might receive in more advanced countries. Hence Koreans can live in "Golden Luxuria Apartuh" or "Noblesse-pia Billa", and far from barfing in their own mouths every time they write their address, actually feel a sense of pride and privilege.

The only time I recall Koreans taking an active dislike to the name of their housing was waaaay back when the tenants of the old (built in the '70s) "AID 아파트" protested & petitioned to have the name changed. They hated that people might associate their apartments with "homo disease".

I was always embarassed to tell taxi drivers where I lived.
