I'm aware this is rain season in Laos but how bad is it? Is the heat unbearable? Does the rain inhibit everything you want to do?
Any info much appreciated.

Don't let the weather stop you from going. You could get lucky and have a week straight with no rain.

OTH, if it comes down hard, get your self a good book, a bottle of Tiger One, a big bucket of ice and just chill. I'd go to Laos anytime of the year and still enjoy myself. But that's just me. Wink

Cheers. You happen to know if it's easy to get guide books around SE Asia?

I know Kyobo bookstores carry the Lonely Planet's Guide to SE Asia. They may have others. There's always Amazon. You won't have any problems finding one.

Incredibly easy. Thailand, Veitnam, etc.. half of the time they photocopy the guides and kids are walking around selling them while you are trying to eat, etc.

They are almost impossible not to find in abundance throughout southeast asia.

I was in Laos at the end of June last year, wasnt bad. You do get some afternoon showers in both Vientiene and Luang Prabang but they really arent that bad. One afternoon while it was raining in Vientienne I went to the wooded Wat that does the massage, tea and herbal sauna, it was so nice just listening to the rain on the leaves

In Luang if you go on the waterfall tour its nice to go swimming there. Just avoid the hill tribe village

I haven't been to Lao yet, but in Cambodia and Vietnam, I find the summers more pleasant, temperate, and photographable (better light) in the summer than the winter. The rain moderates the heat. In the winter, the unrelenting sunshine is terribly hot.
