What's the matter? Do you think you're living "down" by staying here in Korea? Have some pride. You're doing this nation a great service - and I'm sure that ordinary Koreans (granted, ESL teachers don't really register in most Korean people's minds, but I'm talking about when they do) are grateful that you've come all this way to teach this most vital skill to us.
We're not like insular Japan which has a huge domestic economy that can pretty much subsist more or less independently from the world. Korea is a country that has to reach out whether it likes it or not - and English will prove the vehicle that will allow us to do so.
Because our own teachers of English failed so miserably with their stilted grammar and rote memorization methods, you're providing a vital role in "normalizing" English education in Korea. And Korea needs you folks.
And of course you have every right to diss about Korea in the boards.
You can even talk about Japan in a favorable light, too - hey, it's a free country. Every Korean knows that this is a country with a host of problems - and of course the prostitution industry is just one of them.
But Koreans are doing their utmost to change this place for the better - because it is our country. The Anti-prostitution law that was passed in late 2004 is just part of the efforts. Domestic violence is nowhere near pravalent as it was 10 ~ 20 years ago. The boy-girl ratio at birth, in a single decade has gone from a lopsided 115/100 to 107/100 and is constantly improving.
See? In 10 more so-years, this place will be a lot better, with more open-minded people and a better society overall. So stick with Korea, learn the language (which will make your life in Korea about 100 times more bearable) and watch as the country changes. I'm sure that there will be many more lucrative and rewarding opportunities in this country in the future for you. |

Actually, for all that some Koreans talk about changing the society, there are many ways in which I like Korea just the way it is (of course there are things I hate but the lack of PC crap is so refreshing). In fact, I wish I had come here sooner. I find it pretty funny when people tell me I'm here because I couldn't get a job back home. They're largely right - at least I couldn't get a job I actually liked with so much disposable income. Nor could I get a job that is so well respected in society. When I tell Koreans I'm a high school teacher they're impressed. When Canadians say that to other Canadians they often get a look of sympathy. |

Well...you have to take the "You're only here because..." thing with a huge grain of salt because, and let's face it, there are some people here who are kind of scary. They probably just don't really fit into western society, and don't jump down my throat for saying that...I've worked with them, you've worked with them, etc.
At the same time, I still hate when people say that because, well, welcome to the 21st Century. What are you really missing out on back home that can't be imported over here? The lifestyle of the expat will become MUCH more common, not less so.
In fact, people "back home" should be happy that we, the ESL teachers, the missionaries, the backpackers, blazed the trails in places that normally wouldn't have had much contact with our respective home countries. |

Boy! This is so true. Back home teachers don't get even 10% the credit they're due. Being a school teacher is regarded as high on the list as being a nurse (which is also a very under appreciated job). People's thinking on this back home is f-ed up. Teachers, more than ever are so important. Not only do we teach, we child raise.
I don't understand these people on Dave's that insult foreigners who come over here to teach. Many of us are looking for adventure and a job that funds it. Is that the strategy of a loser? As for people that chose to live their lives here, they're chosing an alternative lifestyle. I know a lot of people back home that don't have the guts to come out to Korea.
To the people out there labeling others as losers. What's your definition of a winner? Someone who climbs up the corporate ladder, owns a Benz and has a hot wife? How boring you are!  |

| That loser talk is getting so old. Arrogance and a false sense of coolness. I second that Korea's always changing while it may seem slow if you live through it everyday and the pride thing. Why on earth when a westerner stays in Korea for a long time, it means downgrading? Self and mutual respect! |

I agree with Dev
I do not measure success simply on making big money, having a Benz, and wearing nice suits, but rather on the level of adventure, learning, and personal growth achieved. Many people are teaching in Korea out of interest of studying Asian cultures and traveling the world in pursuit of exploring different art forms, cultures, and great historic sites. This is why I came here, besides the fact that teaching in Korea is a great way to fund my adventure to the world for the fact I am not financially wealthy, but very wealthy in other aspects.
This job has alot to offer individuals with an appreciation for the arts, history, and adventure travel to distant exotic places. Though it is not easy dealing with confusing languages, incomplete maps, pollution, and road traffic; those weekend trips in an Asian country far from America are golden which are what motivates me here.
I would be a loser if I were working for a corporation at home pushing thier products and wearing a suit. That is a pointless pursuit since there is very little reward in it, unless you at the exectuive level which still would be an unpleasant artificial high stress lifestyle. I decided business is not a rewarding career field nor is staying home as that is very boring and unrewarding from my perspective. No shame here in coming to Korea to teach small children a little basic English, math, and science. |

Ha. I'm not sure if the look of sympathy you get from people back home about being a high school teacher is quite a look of sympathy because they think you're working a sucky job, OR sympathy because you work with a difficult part of society.
I'm an elementary school teacher by trade and when someone tells me that they are a middle or high school teacher I definitely give them a look of sympathy- because that's a hard job and I don't have the guts to do it! A look of sympathy because "wow- good for you for doing a job that's so hard."
So that's funny. But also, do we teach just for the standing and respect we get? I hope not. |

That thread and your comment have left me more confused than the time I woke up with my pants undone after passing out from GHB a gay friend gave me. |
