As promised, the Seoul Veggie Club will be meeting twice a month-- the first Sunday of every month, and the third Saturday. We'll be alternating between restaurants and outdoor events as weather permits.

On Saturday, May 19th, at 4:00, the Veggie Club will meet in a park and veg out communally. I'm posting this for three reasons:

1) So those of you who haven't discovered that you can get updates from http://seoulveggieclub.wordpress.com can stay "in the know."

2) So I can get some feedback to help choose a suitable location

3) So I can solicit some help in bringing food. In the past, we've asked for cash to help pay for groceries, which RTeacher prepares and transports in great quantities. This doesn't seem fair, so I'd like to ask people to consider bringing the following to share:

fresh fruit
salads
beverages (beer, water, juice, cola, iced tea, whatever)
desserts
entrees
sandwich bread

RTeacher and I can be responsible for preparing a few main dishes, and members can supplement with their own creations. Sound good?

If you've got an idea for a location or a dish to bring, or would like to confirm your attendance, you can respond here and/or on the veggie club website. Thanks!

Hi. I'm going to be living in the Greater Seoul Area in a bit more than a month. I'll probably be showing up at veggie get togethers if you have them later on in the summer Smile

I haven't made it to any of the veggie gatherings yet, so maybe it's finally time I get myself on the bandwagon.

Saturday the 19th sounds great. I can bring a salad and dessert.

The last place we were at wasn't bad, but I'll try to check out Seoul Grand Park tomorrow (especially if I'm in the Gwacheon area...around Seoul Racecourse Park...)

I might order some "real" veggie burgers from SM Ching hai and get a charcoal grill - and I think I'll experiment with a Pad Thai dish ...

I'll probably bring too much food again (if my back doesn't go out...) so any people who'd prefer not to prepare or bring stuff can just show up and contribute a few thousand won towards expenses ...

I'm going to make an executive decision here re: location because I've got to send out an email to the veggie-list. Darren suggested Yongsan Park, and the Seoul Travel Guide (wikitravel.com) has this to say about it:

Quote:
* Yongsan Park reminds you of famous parks in other countries that you might have seen in some movies. Large grass fields and thick forests will make you feel much relieved from bustling city life ; you will see many kinds of birds and trees. The park once used as U.S military base camps. In 1992, Seoul City bought the land and built the park.

We'll meet at Ichon Station (Line 4), Exit 2
There's a pond and a "barefoot path" if we really need to get our hippie on.

I'll send out an email today, and you can reply here, to me, or on the website (see signature link) if you have an idea of what you'd like to bring (in lieu of a donation to Rteacher to cover his grocery costs.)

"Kermo" has the right idea, I think, and Yongsan Park sounds like a good place.

I like to cook and shop (and have experience cooking for large gatherings...) but logistically it's a strain on me in terms of time (since I live a couple hours away from Seoul) and it's hard for me to carry a lot of stuff on buses and subways...

Last time we had a picnic, I was able to get to Seoul early enough on Friday night to do most of the shopping, and I stayed at a hotel efficiency where I was able to do some cooking Saturday morning. That depends on my being able to leave my school a couple hours earlier than I'm supposed to (and sooner or later I'll run out of good excuses ...)

I realize that it may be very difficult for newcomers to even find their way around on the subway system - let alone shop for stuff or make decent preps. But members - and others who know their way around - should volunteer to provide one of the following:

plates, cups, forks, napkins (or paper towels) - last time we had close to 20 people so there should be enough for at least 25, I think...

whole grain bread - probably 3 large loaves (can be gotten either at Hannam supermarket or the Lotte supermarket at Seoul station - Paris Baggette has small loaves of multigrain or rye but not as good a deal...)

beverages - maybe two volunteers - one to get beer (though most members don't appear to be big drinkers) and another to get soft drinks, including a couple (2 liter) bottles of water (ideally SamDaSoo...)

dessert(s) of some sort (some members - like me - don't eat eggs so be aware of what ingredients are in items - like a pie or brownies - and please inform us if there are eggs - or egg whites...

When in season, watermelons are always a great picnic item...

(I guess strict vegans need to be notified of any milk products, including yogurt, but as yet we don't seem to have any really strict vegans among members...)

salad(s)/salad dressing(s)

any entree or side dish that you're good at (no meat or fish - and preferably no eggs...) that is basically pre-cooked (and can be easily reheated in a pan if necessary...) maybe pasta salad?

Ideally, we should get a charcoal grill (and charcoal...) Otherwise, we'll just go with the propane burner donated by former President "Hater Depot" (and presently being kept by forum and veggie club member, "Oni" ...) If anyone can take charge of getting (and keeping) a charcoal grill, it would be a big plus ...

At this time, I'm not sure what I'll be able to make, but I'll try to do at least one or two main preps (enough for at least 20 people...)

Ta da! I have a charcoal grill! I'd be happy to bring it. I'm also going to bring some cookies (made with butter and eggs.)

Rteacher, you've gone way above and beyond, and I hope we can distribute the load more effectively.

I checked out Yongsan Park yesterday to scout for locations for our picnic. There was a neat little alcove where we'll have some places to sit, and also grass to enjoy. The park has a waterfall, a large field for sports and cavorting, and numerous other features I didn't have time to partake of.

I've taken some pictures of the park, and where we will eventually end up (if you want to arrive later) which I'll post on the veggie-blog soon (Tuesday morning.)

Hey, what time are you guys thinking this little shindig will take place? I have a plan for dinner with friends that evening... so if it's a dinner picnic, I don't think I can make it. Are we talking lunch or dinner here?

If it's lunch, put me down for a big salad (I'll put the feta on the side for any vegans), and some apple crisp for dessert (no eggs, but a lot of butter.)

Looking forward to it. Smile

I'm not sure if we're locked into that 4pm time or not (Kermo is the ultimate decider in this club...)

I personally would like to see apple crisp on the menu ...

Man, I'm always looking for an excuse to make some apple crisp. Wink Had some the other night with friends... never any leftovers.

I've got dinner plans at 7, so I could probably swing a 4pm meeting, though a bit earlier would be a bit better for me.. if 4pm is best for people, then that's fine.

By the way, if anyone coming to the picnic has nut allergies, please speak up.

Actually there are a couple of us vegans!

Should I bring the gas stove on Saturday?

I'm planning on bringing hummus and pita.

If it's not too much trouble, please bring the stove, "Oni", so I could cook something while a team of experts tries to get the charcoal grill going ...

Hummus and pita sound very good. I'll bring at least one vegan thing (but I've also got to have my cheese fix ... Wink )
