This was on http://www.digg.com this week and intereste d me because I was thinking of making something very similar. Somehow it steals jobs from Dave's and a few other places and then scores them. I'm not sure that's even legal. I wonder how long it will take for it to get shut down?

It does not steal jobs, rather links to them and allows honest web surfers to post comments or give thumbs up/down. But this is a rating to a linked job post.

Also, I really doubt that a dozen people from a place that only boasts 5 foreign teachers took time out of their day to give that posting a thumbs up. The very posting that has a teacher quote with grammar so bad that it is no question that a Korean wrote it.

Anyway, if anyone can explain to me how this site is useful (other than to pass time) then please do so. This site does not even give me false comfort.

I was involved with putting this site together so I'll chime in.

I'm pretty sure linking to something is legal. Most of the links are taken from RSS feeds, which is the point of RSS feeds to begin with.

Is the site useful? You tell me. But it was barely out of the gate and people were using it, and traffic is pretty crazy this week after the site was linked up at digg and a few blogs.

I also doubt that 12 people from a small school gave a posting a thumbs up. People rating these jobs have maybe worked there, or maybe they know someone who's worked there, or maybe they just liked the job posting, or maybe they liked the comments, or maybe they are just following other people who gave the job a thumbs-up.

Who knows?

What I do know is that a lot of work was done behind the scenes to make the site spoof-proof, and this is constantly being tweaked. So they're all "real people."

Yep. All real people. Trust us. (so said the crooked hagwon director who proceeded to lie, steal and cheat some fool foreigner, only to fire him in the 12th month, so as to not pay severance, and then evoke a crooked clause in his deviant contract whereby said foolish foreigner must repay the ENTIRE plane ticket for not completing the contract.

Yup. I trust fully that all comments posted are legit. I also find it interesting how the "go aheads" outnumber the "grudges" by a landslide.

If I had to hazard a guess I would say people are more inclined to pick out good jobs than bad. I just took a quick look and it was 130 good and 100 bad, hardly a landslide.

The job postings that get bumped up look pretty good to me, and the ones that get bumped down look kind of crappy. It appears to be working so far.

I'm not saying the wisdom of crowds is the be all and end all, but maybe there's something to it?

But how are you getting these jobs into your web site? and how did you choose which sites to take from?

Looks neat. If it takes off could be quite useful.

Thanks mischief. It's just barely started, but we're already working on making it better and expanding it.

The site goes out every hour and checks a few sites for new jobs, and then puts them into a database, and then displays them on the page.

We experimented with jobs from different sites to get the best mix, and tested it with past and present ESL teachers. Part of the problem with some of the free job sites is that schools and recruiters will post the same job on many of them at the same time, so there's a lot of duplication.

We still might add more sources to it, but right now there's about 30-40 jobs coming through there a day, which is a lot of jobs.

Another possible step is to categorize them, but that's kind of tricky and I'm not sure how useful it would be.
