| The sirens went off here in Bundang too, and I saw from my window that for about 20 minutes, all traffic was stopped in the main intersection of my neighborhood (Migeum). There was one lone police officer standing in the middle of the intersection with a whistle and a red baton. About 5-8 minutes after the sirens stopped, the policeman sauntered out of the intersection, and without further ado, traffic started again. |

They used to be a monthly occurence on the 15th, two sets of sirens: one to start the stoppage, and one the stop the stoppage. No one paid much attention to them then either, unless you were driving. Theoretically pedestrians are supposed to stop too and take shelter underground. Most ignored it and took the opportunity to cross the street.
I haven't heard the sirens in a long time... ahhh... such fond memories. |

Wongjanim: "Don't worry...not your problem....go teach".
Teacher: "Um, perhaps you did not hear me.....the "Nork's" have attacked".
Wongjanim: "Yeah, yeah...ok....go teach class".
Teacher: "Um...I think I better go".
Wongjanim: "No, you stay....teach class.....must follow your contract!"
Teacher: "Um....so you want me to stay, while the "Nork's" are attacking?
Wongjanim: "Yes, teach.......go to class........must teach..don't worry".
Teacher: "Um, why are there helicopters with soliders jumping out of them?"
Wongjanim: "Not your problem....go teach".
Teacher: "NO way, dude. I'm outta here".
Wongjanim: "NO! You must stay! I am boss...(grunt, grunt, pounding chest)...you must do what I say! Go teach class, or you never teach in Korea again."
Teacher: "yeah, that is the idea". |

Sorry to get off topic from the OP, but this struck a nerve...
I quit my very first job in Korea back in '95. The boss, in typical Korean fashion, told me that I couldn't quit and that I must come to work. He then told me that he would call immigration and have them block me from leaving the country and he would also ensure that I could never come back to Korea. He was completely oblivious to the fact that if he had immigration stop me from leaving, making them bar me from re-entry would be completely unnecessary. Love that Korean logic... |
