Ok, so my passport has one year left, but it's only got one page left. I want to get a new one soon so that I can travel this summer. But I went to the embassy website and got the form but they say they need 2 guarantors, since I've lived here for the last 4 years am I able to use a Korean? Or do I have to get some Canadians to fill it out? And do I need garuntors? It seems stupid cause I have a passport already and a canadian birth certificate and a driver's licence and an ARC card. What a pain in the a$$.
Help from those who have done this in Korea before please! |

| You don't need a guarantee. It costs extra without it. |

Well Peter MacKay said today they were going to pass a law to change it but that could be years away. I have 3 pieces of Canadian and Korean ID and current, valid, post-9/11 passport, so all this work seems such a waste.

| The website should have a "declaration in lieu of a guarantor"... nice and easy. Did it last year. |

Go into the embassy (consular affairs are ONLY open in the morning on the 9th floor.
Walk up to the window and tell the receptionist that you need a passport renewal.
She will give you some forms to fill out including a declaration in lieu of the guarantor.
Fill in the forms in the little office beside the reception office.
Give them back to the receptionist along with your current passport, original (not a photo copy) CANADIAN BIRTH CERTIFICATE and 2 other pieces of PHOTO ID and the fees (123k won if I am not mistaken).
You will then be interviewed by the consular officer (takes about 2 minutes).
They will give you a receipt for your money and passport and tell you to return in 3 weeks to get your bright shiny new one.
PAY the extra 5k won and get the 48 page passport instead of the 24 page one. Make SURE you ask for the 48 page one. |

My understanding is that the guarantors do not have to be Canadian citizens, but must meet all of the criteria (i.e. have known you for two years, be a doctor, lawyer, judge, etc.). The guarantor must also reside in the jurisdiction where you are applying for your passport. As mentioned before, you don't necessarily need a guarantor. You can fill out an extra piece of paperwork and fork over some more cash. I'm pretty sure the form isn't available on the web-page. You have to go down there to get it.
As usual, ttompatz's advice is right on the mark. I would add that you can get them to mail your new passport to you (registered mail), so you don't have to go back to the embassy. I just received my new passport last week. Took about two and a half weeks. |

Yes, you need your Birth Certificate + your passport + 2 other pieces of government issued PHOTO ID. Your ARC can be one of them.
If you do NOT have your BC they MAY give you a 1 year passport (as compared to the 5 year one) provided you have enough other CANADIAN ID. This will allow you time to get your BC (since you are out of the country).
If you want to extend or replace that one year passport you will HAVE TO HAVE your PROOF of Canadian citizenship (birth certificate or citizenship certificate).
Be prepared to get a rough time from the consul for waiting so late and NOT having your proper documents. |
