My new (unemployed in his own field) Korean teacher has said its very difficult to find jobs. He asked me what I knew about the Korean economy. Not knowing much I said I thought it was doing well, as the KOSPI is onthe up, as is the value of the Won. HE mentioned that there was a problem owing to the fact that the Korean ecconomy is based on export, especially of technology, but is facing very serious competition (from China, as is the rest of the world). Is this true, are there many unemployed graduates? What is the rate of unemployment? I though they were doing well with their phones and LCD screens. Is this correct? What are the vital signs one needs to measure to gauge the Korean ecconomy? Is the value of the Won a sure indicator?

The economy is doing fine. In fact, not bad at all.

Their problem lies in the system that so quickly reproduces wealthy families into even welthier families. Especially in the last 5 years, the rich have gotten richer and the poor have eaten ddong. That's why many say the economy is not good. It's just not good for some people.

I don't have any specific figures to point to, but I'm sure they could be easily found. . . It seems that the job market is highly competitive here, especially among young men. Unemployment and, even more significantly, underemployment are a real problem. It's one of the reasons English schools etc. thrive; anything to get a leg up on the competition.

I wonder if it's a fact that SK really has an economy based on manufacturing (albeit high quality, high tech stuff) but now all that stuff is being made and shipped from China//?
