Today in Seoul at around 2 pm air raid sirens went off because of a high gum snapping alert - apparently gum cracking had reached a critical mass with a reported 1 out of every 3 Koreans snapping away loudly. The combined vibrations of the snapping crackers worried scientists due to the possiblity of shifting the tectonic plates underneath Seoul and possibly causing earthquakes.

People waited silently on streetcorners and all snapping was momentarily halted. It was a tense 10 minutes but all soon returned to normal. People went about their daily activities thankful to have avoided tragedy.

In a related story a Canadian man working at a university in Seoul threw himself in front of a train because he just couldnt stand the gum cracking any longer. A solitary ajumma cracked away with a blank look on her face as the man was heard to yell "its following me!" as he jumped.

I know it doesn't bother some people on this board but I hate the gum cracking more than anything else....After a couple of years here Ajuma's of the short haired, rugby pushing variety are on my radar and easily avoided, but that damn gum cracking makes me want to slap that person while asking them how old they are...
