Dongdaemun is one place I know of. It's hard to describe how to get there.
If you come out exit 6 or 7 I'm not sure which (anyway, the one that goes to Pyongwha market, I think it's called) you'll come up at a four way intersection.
Look around. At one corner of the intersection is a parking lot and, behind that, a tall, big-box looking building. This building houses fabric shops. It is a silver/blue color with few or no windows.
(Another corner sells shoes. Another used books. The third corner sells
bags and stuff).
So get down back into the subway steps so you come up at the corner that has the big fabric building. Walk along that road away from where you came. On your left will be Chungechon, that man-made canal.
Walk passing button shops, handbag shops, sewing materials shops, leather shops, velcro shops and, eventually, after 100 meters or so...
....you'll notice on the right a mall that has, high above, a kind of arching
plexiglass roof high up, like those malls in Japan. You'll see, looking down, khaki/olive drab color goods galore. You'll see, also, in the center of the little mall streets (pedestrian only) ladies sitting in sewing kiosks doing mending.
You'll find about twenty or so shops that all sell army surplus. Clothes, utility belts, helmets, shovels, sleeping bags, etc. Good luck on your mission, you'll need it with these directions. |
