To apply for a new job in Korea, I have to have a letter of release beforehand or can I go about applying right away?

Secondly, why do schools/recruiters/etc. seem to shun people who have quit partways through a contract?

You can always apply but you'll need to either:

a. get your visa cancelled
b. get your employer to approve visa transfer

Recruiters like to lowball people so that they can get better/easier commisions. They don't give a crap about you and ussually just want to push you into a job so that they get their paycheck.

They think they can make you feel like you're worth less if they bring up the fact that you did not finish your contract.

You really can't think of an answer for that?

A year looks like you can do it. Less than a year- well, would you hire someone who quit after less than a year unless they had a really, really good reason? (and I suppose some kind of evidence of the reason)

I wouldn't.

Schools want somebody who will honor and complete the one year contract, just like we want a school that will honor the contract. The school has to put a lot of money into a new employee. They don't want to risk losing it, and having to find a new teacher, which is not always easy.

Not saying that there aren't good reasons for quitting many jobs, cause there are. But I understand why it might be difficult to get schools interested. It would be difficult to get them to understand your reasons for leaving.

It's not just schools and recruiters. If you have a track record of not finishing contracts, and leaving part way through your jobs, Immigration will just stop approving visas for you. Why should they when you can't be bothered to finish one contract?

Bingo. You signed the contract. Now admittedly, your employer may have a fuzzier notion about what fulfilling a contract means, but you probably knew that going into the deal. If you didn't then you didn't do your homework about how fast and loose (ie, unprofessional) teaching in Korea is.

My advice on contracts, even if they're crap, is to suck it up and keep going unless you plan on returning home and never teaching in Korea again. Want to get back at your boss? Steal office supplies.

Don't use contraception, then one day YOU could be the boss. Shotgun wedding anyone?

Sorry, but I'm definitely not "sticking it out" here, this place is the utter dump of Korea; no redeeming features at all. I could go on and on but that's pointless.

Another 6 months and I am certain that I will go insane

So how do people get out shyte situations? I find it ludicrous that you should have to stay somewhere you can't stand.

I'm going to give proper notice and all. It's not like I'm running out on them. To add, I am not a newbie to teaching or living abroad.

I do not want this craphole to be the definition of my Korean experience.

No, it's not pointless. What makes your location such an "utter dump"?

Exactly, what is it you can't stand? Has your school mistreated you? Lied to you? Broken the contract in any way?

You sure sound like one.
