Public Epikers we are now under the NIIED control. Got an official email.

EPIK transferred to NIIED

Since 1995, EPIK has been operated by the Korea National University of Education. The Ministry of Education in Korea has decided to operate and manage EPIK from a national level with more responsibility, thus EPIK has been transferred from KNUE to NIIED(the National Institute for International Education Development), effective this year.

NIIED is a government organization responsible for education of overseas Koreans and international exchange and cooperation in education. It was designated as an executive agency affiliated with Korean Ministry of Education.

It is expected that NIIED will be best suited for EPIK program due to its rich experience in international exchange and cooperation at a national level and well-built networks with government and nongovernment international organizations and overseas ethnic Korean societies.

Greetings from the President of NIIED
Thank you for your interest in English Program in Korea
(EPIK)!

EPIK, affiliated to the Korean Ministry of Education, was established in 1995 with the mandate to improve the English speaking abilities of students and teachers in Korea, to develop cultural exchanges, and to reform English teaching methodologies.

EPIK extends invitation to responsible, enthusiastic native speakers of English who are motivated to share knowledge with students and teachers.

It is hoped that through EPIK, English language education will cultivate open-minded and well-rounded Korean individuals capable of advancing Korea in this age of information and globalization. It is also expected that in doing so, EPIK will promote cultural exchange and foster strong ties between Korea and other countries.

I hope that you will invest your time in Korea for a wonderful and valuable opportunity to experience life in another culture.

Sincerely,

Na, Jong Hwa

President

National Institute for International Education Development

EPIK invites 251 native English assistant teachers for Sep 1 placement(Good LUCK)

On the request from 14 provincial offices of education, EPIK will invite 251 EPIK teachers to be placed at public schools on September 1st this year. The application deadline is May 31. Applicants should submit the required documents (refer to www.epik.go.kr) to either a Korean Embassy, Korean Consulate General or the EPIK Office in Seoul. Interviews will be arranged by the office where the documents are submitted. EPIK will try its best to meet the needs of the students and teachers and ultimately improve English education in Korea.

EPIK will diversify the recruiting system to meet the increasing needs for native English language teachers from provincial education offices and ultimately public schools. EPIK will continue to invite native English assistant teachers twice a year with a regular recruiting plan with fixed application deadlines, plus an on-going recruitment scheme, which will be used to fill vacancies that may occur at any time during the year.

Allowance will be provided for referrals

To attract 251 native English language teachers to be placed at public schools on September 1 2007, EPIK has promoted the program through a variety of media. The EPIK team is convinced, however, that the most effective and desirable way to promote the program is by word of mouth.

Therefore, EPIK has decided to rely on the abundant resources of the current native English language teachers at schools, such as their experience in schools, the requirements for the position, and their circle of friends and acquaintances. In consideration for their valuable effort and contribution in helping to secure more EPIK teachers, if the qualified individual(s) whom the current native English language teacher recommends is selected as an EPIK assistant teacher and placed at a public schools as of September 1, EPIK will pay a finder's fee of 100,000 W for each individual thoroughly processed.

- How the current native English language teacher can promote: By phone, e-mail, words, personal website, etc.

- How EPIK confirms their contribution: In Section 19-7 of the EPIK application form, the applicant should precisely indicate the following information about the recommender: 1) name, 2) gender, 3) nationality, 4) name of the school where currently working, 5) telephone number, and 6) e-mail. [The referral box should be ticked with a check mark.]

- How EPIK provides the allowance: The allowance will be transferred to recommender’s bank account within a month following the applicant's successful placement at a school.

※ The applicant who is referred should apply through Korean missions abroad or through the EPIK office in Seoul(exclusive of applicants who use recruiters).

EPIK looks forward to the current native English language teachers’ helpful cooperation and participation in this new scheme, with sincere thankfulness in advance.

Support system for EPIK teachers will be established

EPIK is working to establish a support system for native English language teachers. First of all, we have a plan to set up a ‘Council Office for Native English Language Teachers’ which will handle problems or difficulties EPIK teachers may encounter at their school and/or living in Korea.

The EPIK team will employ a native English speaking coordinator to assist in managing the Council Office, through a rigorous competitive process. The coordinator will support EPIK in many ways including: managing the counsel office, mediating disputes, giving consultations, responding to inquiries, ensuring English language quality, documentation control and other assignments from EPIK and NIIED.

Staffed with native English speaking coordinator, EPIK will be rejuvenated as a more professional organization. We believe the new coordinator will greatly assist in making all EPIK teachers' stay in Korea both satisfying and enjoyable.

EPIK also aims to provide a complete orientation to new EPIK teachers. EPIK Orientation will take place around late August for about 10 days. Before EPIK teachers enter Korea, we will offer useful information on Korean culture, regional characteristics of Korea and living in Korea. Right after their entry, we will try to help them to adapt to their school and Korea, by offering substantial guidance to teaching methodologies, their designated school and the region where they will teach through the orientation.

On top of the orientation, EPIK will give the teachers better opportunities to experience Korean culture and develop their teaching skills while they are teaching at public schools as EPIK teachers.

EPIK is also planning to redesign its website so that teachers can exchange useful information and meet with other EPIK teachers on line.

If they ask veteran and new Native Teachers for feedback and suggestions then the idea can be very helpful and successful.

If us native teachers don't have any say in the process then its just gonna be a big joke on Dave's Forums.

You remind me of a guy back home that applied to several police forces & was rejected by every one. Now he is "cop-hater el supremo".

Were you turned down by public schools in Korea? Not flamin' ya, mate, just curious. And don't give us the "you're dancing monkeys" crap because coming from a hakwan type that's pretty rich....

Public schools turn people down? Ha. Now that's a joke.

If I wanted a public school job, I'd simply go out and get one.

It's the mandatory drug test and/or criminal background check that you fear.

Suppose that the person you recommend does a runner? Do you have to pay this "finder's fee" back to EPIK a la recruiter style? Laughing

100K? This is a joke. They are just trying to avoid paying recruiters.
Make it half the recruiters fee and I'll help place people.

tightwads. Man, they must think all foreign teachers are stupid. I don't predict their program getting much better. The waegookin who takes that consulting position will probably be selected based on their aptitude for ass-kissing.
