the spinning fan of a vacuum could create a static electricity charge, while the air is just.. well, air.. if the metal end of a vacuum hose hit something, I suppose it could do something.. (well, not entirely sure about that one)

but I also heard that using compressed air could actually blow dirt INTO a space that it wouldn't normally get into..

correct. I did this when I was a novice. I had to take apart my laptop (well...my wife's laptop) and clean it. You should have seen the glob of dust and hair that was jamming up the fan. Afterwards, I put the laptop back together and everything was running as if it were new again. I sold it a while ago; I wonder how it is doing now?

How exactly does one take apart a laptop without screwing it up?

I do need to clean mine badly. My apartment is quite dusty even though I leave the window open everyday because I have turtles that need unfiltered sunlight...sigh....

That's why your apartment is dusty! Korea is a mighty dusty place. Yellow sand from China, chronic construction....... Open windows allow all that dust in.

Tomppatz recommended a place in Yongsan who will take apart your laptop and clean it for you for 10,000won. Worth doing.

I guess but I don't live in Seoul or in an area of chronic construction...

But I see your point. After I posted, I ended up looking at my laptop and realized it was possible to get to the fan, so I did so. I used some qtips and cleaned as best as I could.....

The laptop is still alive so I consider the operation a success Very Happy
