You know, I made my post about the pencil to have a laugh at some of the cheapskates who try to sell the dumbest little things for 10,000 or 15,000.

I guess there are a couple of possibilities. First, they are desperate for cash. Second, they are just that freaking cheap. Trying to grab every penny they can before they ditch out.

Do people know how many poor people could use a hand-me-down item like a microwave, bookshelf or a vacuum? I mean, there are truly hurting people around and we try to hock our unneeded items to each other for a few measly won when it could mean the world to a family.

Churches (you don't need to be Christian) find great homes for things. I have given away so many things here; computers, vacuums, desks, tales, books, TVs, radios. People need these things more than any foreigner needs a few more won to leave with.

Come on folks...an iron? Just give it away.

Yeah, I guess I am being judgmental here; I don't know everyone's story or why they may need 15,000 won. Sorry to any who are in dire straits, but for the rest of you, do the right thing. Take your stuff to a church or other such place (I don;t know any off-hand; I take my stuff to churches) and help someone who needs it more than you.

Its easy and IMO, rewarding to know that you are doing a kind thing.

Flame away.

even worse are the things people try to sell for 1000 or 2000 won.

I've given away:

region free DVD player
baby walker (also recieved it free)
DVDs
MP3 player
several books
and a couple of other things I can't remember.

I completely agree with Demophobe on this one. sometimes it's just not worth selling - give it away. Make someone's day. Hell if you don't want to give it away on Dave's you can do what demophobe suggested and give it to a church, the salvation army or dispose of it on recycle day - many people comb the garbage for diamonds in the rough.

In the past I've thought about trying to start a freecycle community here in Seoul. But the penny-pinching on this board made me think that it wouldn't work.

Perhaps it's worth giving it a try.

I can't agree more. I have seen so many posts with people trying to sell the most ridiculous things for 1000w or whatever. Have these people ever heard of charity? I have a theory on these sellers, but I will keep that to myself.

This is a good idea, but it implies the need for such a service to just plain give stuff away. It's all well and good to pass things between us in the foreign community, but we are lucky in comparison to the majority of Koreans.

People here complain about cash all the time; their own lack of it or who is making more for good or bad reasons, but it's all beside the point. We do pretty well here (at least I do and I know a number of others who would say the same) and it really is just good to help out a community and country that generally does pretty well for us.

No amount of bitterness against Korea can deny that people hurt, regardless of the country and they need help. We are in a position to offer a modest service. Just giving away things that we already bought, used and for all purposes, are done with.

Just give it away. No need for any organization past the ones that already exist for this exact purpose.

Yeah...look, this isn't to start a debate about the merits of giving. It's just an idea...do what you like with your stuff.

While I think this topic has merit, it would probably be better discussed in the General forum and not here since you are not specifically buying or selling anything.

Locked for now.

Feel free to restart it in the general forum.
