Yesterday at work I got a "verbal warning" from my boss for teaching the wrong book (Not true). This "verbal warning" consisted of my boss screaming at me in the teachers lounge and then in front of a whole class of children and then in the hallway in front of teachers, students, and parents. The head teacher took him aside and explained that even if I was wrong the way he behaved was inappropriate and that, in fact, I did NOT do anything wrong. I proceeded to show him my meticulously kept teachers log for every single class to prove it to him. Not only has he not apologized but I still have a "verbal warning" in my file. This is bull.

My first instinct was to pack my things and quit but I've decided I'll think about it for a bit. It turns out he's done this to several other teachers as well.

/shrug Rolling Eyes

I suggest getting to Kyobo ASAP and buying 'Hagwon Management For Incompetent Ajoshis'. Teach that to your class.

Don't cha love hakwon life?

This may be nothing more than a rant by your boss.

BUT, in case it isn't...

Pull in your horns - it will just cause stress.
Dig out and dust off your interpersonal skills.
Quietly nod your head, say yes and do what you were doing in the first place - teaching kids.

If the crap hits the fan, remember the numbers of the labor board (1350 - press 7 for English service) and pension office (1355). File complaints if appropriate (without telling your boss) and let the chips fall where they may.

DOCUMENT everything.

If you really have some guts, type up a letter of release and hand it to him the next time he's going off on you. Tell him that if you're such a bad teacher then sign, date, and stamp it right now.

"I'm sorry, I cna't accept your verbal warning. I'll need that in writing." Unless, of course, verbal warnings and their consequences are spelled out in your contract...

Haha, I miss the poster Austin. He was a real beep but a classic troll. For example, he'd write something like this in response to the suffering OP;

'It is the foreigner's responsibility to be sensitive to the culture of Korea and how the culture applies in the workplace. Have you perhaps offended your boss in some way? Due to the low calibre of the foreign teachers I have encountered, and their inappropriate, insenstitive statements and behaviours I've been uncomfortable enough to have heard and seen, I suspect you have simply not seen, and therefore subtly but fatally violated, the otherwise generous code of conduct that has allowed a foreigner access to this emloyment position in the first place. It may not be too late for you to make amends with your boss, after soul-searching (though I perceive the quality of self-examination, honest reflection to be nearly absent in most FTs, at least those I've had the misfortune to smell)
to realize your mistake. Perhaps a small gift is in order, some peeled fruit and an apology. Good luck'.

Hahaha, he was classic. Re; the OP's post, what Tom said. I'd pack one of those microcassette recorders. REALLY! The guys down at immigration are not entirely sold on shady hagwon masters and if you run over what you've recorded, the outbursts, (with a Korean speaker) and make a 'greatest hits' of Herr Crapants going off the immigration guys will love it.

In my contract it states that after two warnings they can fire me.

If you don't want to be fired then try not to give them a reason to fire you.
Keep your eyes on the finish line and try to get there.

I don't want to be negative and rain on the parade, but it doesn't matter what your contract says. The contract is a formality and more of a 'verbal' agreement than anything else.

If they want you gone they'll get rid of you. Period. They can fire you whenever they want to and when it boils down to it you can wipe your ass with your contract (but don't flush!).

I can't imagine my boss ever yelling at me or giving me verbal warning at my hagwon even if I did something really grossly stupid and ignorant.

She would probably beg me not to do it again. Laughing

He's probably covering his ass. A lot of these guys will make SURE you have a warning or two, so if they want to drop you right before the contract ends, it'll be no problem. If the contract says 2 warnings, he's now got you where he wants you. Find out if other teachers have been inexplicably fired right before their contract was up.

Austin was banned 3 yrs. ago. He re-emerged as "Bukowski", made another fine name for himself and hasn't been heard from for awhile....
