Been to any of the films?
I lived in worked in Busan in 1996-1997 and caught the 1st season. It was great.. had a great time.. went to shows in the afternoon between split shifts..
Anyone going down from Seoul this weekend? I'm strongly considering it.. just curious for those who are in Busan.. are most selling out already? Any recommendations? Buying beforehand? Is there a website for it in English perhaps (alot to ask I know).. |

There are lots of little hotels in Nampo-Dong, which is the sort of second and southern downtown of Busan. This is where PIFF is centred. I don't know what they cost, but a very nice love hotel in Haeundae on the beach is 27.000. Generally, prices are slightly lower than in Seoul.
The internet booking system is very poor, as it allows people to reserve (i.e. hog) tickets without paying for them. Almost everything will be listed as sold out. My students tell me to show up for the movie you like, and you can usually buy a ticket on a sort of 'standby' basis as unclaimed tickets are put on sale before the movie starts.
I'm not a movie guy, but it's a nice time to visit Busan as the rain has stopped, the leaves are changing, and the beaches are quiet.

I went last year and stayed in the Heongdae beach area. I went to Megabox and the movies I was interested there. If the sign says sold out, just go to the counter and ask and they will tell you to wait as tickets do become available.
It's a good time. |

Anyone know if there are any controversial films being shown like for example "Lies" which was shown about three years ago. When this hit the screens in Korea it was heavily edited, but in the Pusan film festival it was shown completely uncut. The uncut version if it had, would have run as an X rated movie.
The stars and the director were on hand at the festival during the sceening of that particular movie, and were available for questions. from what I read some of the remarks were quite caustic, but others were full of praise. |

Went last weekend. Really good. Tickets can be a little tricky though. Get up early and buy them on the day. |

No, it wouldnt have, as there was no penetration or real sex. Lots of nekkidity and some pink but you might be too young to remember Tinto Brass films or LAST TANGO IN PARIS, which are not dissimilar, albeit older.
The uncut version wasnt porn, nor was it even IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES (i. e. minor graphic, light x sex).
Good film though.
Cheers,

I remember an article In Cine21 or Kino I think it was where a North Korean defector who works as an advisor on films like RHEE CHEOL-JIN: THE SPY and SHIRI and J. S. A. was talking about BULGASARI when it was released in North Korea. He was a teen then and was still up north. He talked about how the Kims didnt allow a star system and that after a few pictures the Stars might be forced to retire. He went on to mention that extras were often average peoples workers who were ordered to participate, and some directors used the power given to them by one of the Kims (probably Jr, as he is a reported cineaste) to beat anyone who made mistakes or got out of line. The article also mentioned how workers would be given days off and were told to see certain films.
I would NEVER watch a modern North Korean film until they are liberated. Their product be it film or machines should be boycotted and the world should strong-arm Hitler/Stalin Kim into a grave.
Two won,
