Hi,

I'm wondering if there are any triathlon clubs/running clubs in the Gangnam area. I'll be in Seoul from mid June-end of July and I'd love to find group of ppl to swim/ run/ bike with. Is there a website in Korea like Active.com that we have in the States? Would love to do a 10K/half marathon/ aquathlon while I'm there.

I am not a great runner and I don't live in Seoul but I googled triathlon Korea and found this list of events

I'm sure others can chime in with more info.

Good luck, you brave brave soul!

Hey, there's a triathlete team called, "seoul syngergy". Its a group of 1/2 foreigners and 1/2 Koreans. Run by some foreigners who are in the US army. They have a website, www.seoulsynergy.com

If you want more info, pm me.

I don't know how often Seoul Synergy meets. I and others have started a new club. We meet Tues and Saturdays and get together for socials and other special runs. Also races but in summer, the number of races drops (but there are still many) because of the heat. Seoul Flyers www.seoulflyers.com Check out the bulletin board at www.seoulflyers.com/bb

I'm in Gangnam and run the mountains quite abit and take my bike on some cool trails in the area (don't recommend the road bike, even on the Han and other trails, especially in summer it is super dangerous, people/kids everywhere.)

Unfortunately I've only done 2 triathlons in my life. Can't swim worth a damn and I guess that is cause I don't try. I've a swimming pool where I live but haven't gone yet.....just too damn frustrating. Now time to jump on my erg!

Hey! That is so cool you are starting a triathlon group.

Yeah, you're right, finding places to ride (on the road) is hard in Korea. However, those guys on the seoul synergy team do a ride on Saturday morning that goes out to some dam and back on this nice road through thie place called nam han san seong.... They actually manage to ride like 6 or 7 hours sometimes to get ready for "ironman's" or whatever. I think they get around the traffic by leaving Seoul at 7am (they actually leave from Itaewon).

I've done a few of thier rides, and even though I dont often show up since where I live has much much better road riding, I'd say its worth a shot.

If you start a ride of your own for your team, let me know.... Wink

pest,

Yeah, it has started up pretty good -- seeing we were just amateurs at this sort of "club" stuff. The problem with Seoul Synergy was that the rides weren't regular enough and the website was never updated. So us runners parted company. So mainly seoul flyers is a running club but we do hope that others will step up and do some fitness rides.

Our Christmas party and other socials went well and it is just a nice community of fitness minded people, we are trying to build. If you are in town some Saturday/weekend, let me know and you can go for a run with us. Very easy running, socially we don't race or run hard...

I like running too. Not so much anymore as I have no time but I try to do it twice a week atleast. Just no time to run other than the weekend. But for me, hands down, there is no better sport than running. The best thing for me were my 20km+ runs when after a while you sort feel like you are meditating. 20k goes by very fast.

cool. Actually, I dont do much running. I just ride road and MTB. I rode with the Seoul Synergy guys a few times. I remember a few years ago when I got here they had a seperate running team.. but now it seems they're just about triathlons.

I can understand why you guys broke off and made your own running team.

Yeah,... its funny... back home, we all sorta go our own way and do our sports very specifically -- ie I would join a bike race only team that has nothing to do with triathlons and even less with running. Here... well, in Korea, there basically isnt any road bike racing for foreigners (save maybe 2 or 3 races per year), just a handful of MTB races, a handful of triathlons, and a few running races.... So if you wanna stay in shape, maybe you have to do a bit of everything.

Still, running tears apart my legs and knees. I'm too lazy to learn that swimming stuff... Actually, if I get into a new sport, I'd like to try that short track speed skating. That looks like a blast!

Oh cool! There are some ppl out there in Seoul to swim/bike/run with! Actually, I found the Seoul Synergy website but like you said, it wasn't updated. I emailed the group leader but never got a response.

I'm definitely an amateur so I'm just looking to keep up w/ fitness (mainly swim & run b/c I won't have a bike) while I'm in Seoul in June and July. I got hooked in the sports last year and I've done 4 Oly distance triathlons and 1 sprint so far . I'd love to get together with the group for a run/swim.

Does anyone know of a pretty decent gym that has a lap pool and spinning classes?

Thanks for the info. I think this group is more for pro/elite athletes so I don't think I quite fit their qualifications. I do TRIs for fun Very Happy . They did have some great info on the tri races that are planned for this season. I hope I can go to one of them and if I'm lucky, maybe I'll participate in the relay with someone. I can swim or run. I won't have my bike with me in Korea. Any takers?

I did my first Olympic triathlon last weekend in Tongyeong, south coast.

It was an awesome, challenging and a satisfying experience. Ive trained for 4 months 5-6 days a week and it really paid off especially in the 1.5km swim.

I encourage anyone wanting to get in superb physical condition and accomplish something worthwhile, inlieu of drinking marathons.

Tri it!
