Remember when gmail first came out and having a gmail address kinda had a certain cache to it? Well, after using it a lot for some very important stuff, I have to say that I think it sucks.
Foremost is the stupid way they group mail into "conversations". Why is there no option to sort the mail chronologically? We should at least have that option. And if somebody replies to something but doesn't use the same RE: header, it's put in a different conversation. It's annoying.
Second is the way they're constantly bragging about how much space they give you. Tell me, though, what good is 2 gigs when you can't even get a 30MB file uploaded? Why don't they have a real uploading application with a progress bar and everything? They should at least have the option. Instead, you attach the file and hit send, and then pray that it's uploading. If your upload is interrupted, you're screwed. Annoying.
There are other smaller complaints. It gives me errors fairly frequently. And the error messages start with "oops!" Yeah, real cute the first time, but not funny when you need something to go through. Also, it keeps me signed in as I use google. I don't like the idea of google connecting my email address to my porn searches. Yeah, I know they have other ways of tracking my searches, but still, it's unsettling.
All of this wouldn't be so annoying if it weren't presented with that chipper arrogance that defines google. Look at what's on the login page: "Gmail is a new kind of webmail, built on the idea that email can be more intuitive, efficient, and useful. And maybe even fun." Right. The google search engine is great, but gmail sucks. |

Nope, disagree... almost completely.
Gmail conversations are the way to go! It is so much easier than finding RE: messages everywhere. Although, I agree, options to sort them chronologically is good. I like the ease of labels for everything. I have few error messages and no real problems. But I will agree also with the foolishly small 10 Mb limit.
Oh well, it is not perfect but it is miles ahead of all the others. |

I like my Gmail account and I use it but I do agree it's not ideal. That's why I still primarily use my Hotmail account.
My biggest beef with gmail is that I can't work out how to do a group email. It might be easy but I can't see how it's done.
The best thing Gmail did was embarrass the other providors to give more than a few measly MB's of inbox. Never having to delete an email is comforting. I remember the years when Hotmail had an inbox limit of 2MB's!! Imagine!! |

I agree with everything in this post. The best thing Gmail did was start the inbox arms race. And I tip my hat to them.
I also use my hotmail more than my gmail. It just works. It's simpler and faster. I dunno. Maybe it's just nostalgia value. I switched the new windows live mail, but I couldn't figure out how to copy and paste stuff in the mail. Right-clicking did nothing. Right there, I switched back to classic hotmail. If they're f*cking up the basics like copy and paste, you know it's some bloated piece of sh*t web 2.0 bullsh*t. |

Does anyone know why I get like 100+ spam mails every few days with gmail? I get junk with my hotmail account too (which is the main email address I use), but only a little bit. With gmail I get so much that half the time I just delete them all without looking... makes me worried I'm gonna miss a new message (cuz I couldn't be bothered to sort through it all) from somebody I know (i.e. whose first message has been sent to the the junk folder)... anyone else have this problem? |

I found gmail really irritating to use at first. Things weren't where they were supposed to be. You had to do a lot of hunting around. But I guess I can live with it these days. |

gmail rocks.
Space, organization, love all sorts of options about it. A BIG improvement over other applications and also even microsoft's.

Yeah I've heard others say this too. But really, all I'm getting is loads of spam... I just checked it in fact and had 60 since the day before yesterday. Of course it gets sent to the junkmail folder, but I even get the odd spam in my inbox too... I looked at setting filters or whatever but it could only be done on specific addresses/subjects. Maybe it's just me. I don't know what the hell... |

The only area for improvement in my opinion would be to have the ability to split and merge conversations. |

The upload limit might be lower than gmail, not sure, most email clients limit you around 16MB, meaning that even if you can send a file that is bigger, the client you send it to will most likely not be able to recieve it.

break files down into more manageable sizes for uploading. |

If you use Firefox get the BetterGmail add-on. Helps you tweak it some and makes it look better in my opinion. You also have to install Greasemonkey, but it's very easy to do. |
