I wrote a note to my boss yesterday asking very nicely that he bring my diploma into work today. There were no problems and he gave it to me. He asked me, "Why do you want it back?" I replied, "Because I want it back." I have other duplicate copies as well that I brought with me when I came to Korea.
I'm just curious as to what responses other posters may have heard from their employers.

When I asked for mine back I was initially asked why? and then told that they needed to keep it in case they were audited and needed to show it.
(this is not a hagwon). I then said that they cost a lot of money for me to replace and I wanted to make sure they were safe (which is true ... They would have cost me $75-100 each to replace and taken 1-2 months to replace .. and I had 3)
I offered to bring it in to school if that happened and it was needed and they took a photocopy and gave them back to me.

I didn't have to ask for mine back, she gave it back to me soon after I started working. |

Those of us who applied for our E2 visa from our home country needed to send it to them so they could do the first stage of visa application in Korea ... When the diploma came back from Immigration (who needed to see the diploma but not keep it) our schools kept the diplomas for us until we arrived in the country .... then we should have got it straight back ... as there is no need for the Employer to keep hold of the diploma.

You can also send a notarized copy (I'd never send the original). |

Another group that may require a copy of your diploma would be the Ministry of Education. Therefore, go to the Korean Consulate and ask for 2 or 3 certified copies of your diploma to be made. They will make a photocopy and stamp it as official. Then they will give you the original and the copies.
There is a fee for this, but it prevents the "boss" from holding it hostage or selling it on the black market.
AND if you aren't here yet, this same procedure will suffice for getting your VISA. |

Option Other: employers have never held onto my degree, so I've never had to ask. |
