I noticed the other day that cases of Bud were selling for W24,000 or thereabouts. I also noticed that six packs of Bud were selling at the local Lotte Mart for around W5500.
Now correct me if I'm wrong, but when one buys in bulk, one typically gets a substantial discount. Am I missing something? Meat seems to be the one commodity that you save money on, and even that's questionable given the annual W30,000 dues.
Lick me, Ripco. |

Perhaps the expensive Bud actually tastes like Bud. It could be imported from the US. The Bud here has been Koreanized and tastes nothing like what you get back home. |

Complaining about the price of beer is most likely indicative of a much larger problem you face in life.

I think alcohol is something that has tariffs and taxes. It doesn't matter if its beer, wine, or hard liquor.
I'm thinking the high prices for imported beer is from the Korean government, and not Costco.
We'll see if that is true after the FTA goes through. |

Be that as it may, one would still expect a discount when buying in bulk, on everything from booze to peanuts to underpants. |

This is a pretty common problem with internet foruums (English, Korean, or otherwise). One example is used to justify an extreme viewpoint.
Costco is hit-and-miss (especially in front of the steak sample table! har!) on prices - some things are quite a bit cheaper. Dove soap, lotion, breads, meat, etc -- but the advantage is that Costco carries a lot of products other stores do not. |

Yeah, Mack, it's called shopping. There's some skill involved. The bargains aren't just handed to you. Didn't mom teach her cub shopping skills? |

One would assume from the fact that I noticed that there was no difference in price between sixers and a case that I have "shopping skills". Never give people too much credit. Lesson learned.

That depends on how much you buy. Unless you're buying pounds of meat every week over the course of a year you won't recover that W30,000 membership fee based on the "savings." I worked the math. In other news, salmon steaks were actually cheaper at Homever.

No, not really. These days our local Homever has just about everything Costco does, minus those fantastic cinnamon buns. |

I agree with Mack here. Costco does not offer any significant discount on alcohol. The best deal is the cheese. There are some different frozen and canned products but for most things you are just better off going to Emart or Home Plus.
Costco ain't all that. |

Things I bought at Costco that were a great deal:
razor blades
gillette shaving cream
dove soap
socks
protein powder
beef
cheese
stuffed pasta
granola bars
nutri grain bars
cranberry juice |

But...the bagels at Homever suck ass (and are more expensive.) And the cheese costs more. And they don't have good bacon. Or good coffee.
On the other hand, Homever has those gigantic-ass 4 liter boxes of wine for 18,000 won. And soft pretzels. And dill pickles. |
