You can easily find a hotel for half that price in Bangkok. |
yeah but I don't like kao san road any more than I like itaewon |
I agree with the OP! Maybe there are better places than Sukumvit, too. Someone please enlighten us? |
"better places than Sukumvit?!" You've got to be joking. All the expats and Thais in Bangkok know Sukumvit Road to be thee worst smutt pit of the whole country. Suk11 is tucked back and away from the center of all that junk. There's a sign at the front desk that clearly reads, "SEX TOURISTS ARE NOT WELCOME HERE!" Suk11 is just a big cozy place with a family atmosphere. They don't have an elevator so you have to hike it up some very steep wooden stairs and down a long, uneven hallway to get to your room. Yes you do need to make a reservation. They rarely take walk-ins as they keep it fairly full all year round with many regular repeat guests. |

Can you read? I asked for a recommendation other than Sukumvit!

Sukumvit? Really? I always thought that dubious distinction belonged to Patpong or Pattaya. If Sukumvit Road is so bad, why would you recommend the OP stay at Suk 11?

Sounds nice!

| I live in BKK and the exchange rate is very near 35 baht to $1 USD. So, 1000 baht will be around 35 US dollars. |
Math is not your strong point.
Finally, since you live in BKK, can you recommend someplace besides Suk 11 and KSR or not? Somewhere near the Skytrain, like the OP requested? That is the point of this thread. Sorry, OP for the hijack. |

I always stay at the Hotel Reno, very near the skytrain terminal station at the national arena and MBK center.
It is a very clean, friendly place, and there are usually a lot of Thais staying there, and the little restaurant is always full of local Thais. Also has a pool. |

that sounds like a nice place, how much? going to be spending a day or two there before heading to Yangon and was debating between there and the guesthouses between ksr and the river |

Yes I can read. Can you? Don't forget that I am an expat who LIVES in Bangkok so you can get off your high horse now.
Just three weeks ago, I exchanged a $1,000 Dollar US Traveler's Check and the exchange I got back was 34,570 baht. So you do the math because I'm too lazy and I don't care.
As for Sukhumvit road, I stand by my statement that it is Thailand's worst smutt pit of all and I've been many times to Patpong and Pattaya. Sukhmvit road takes the cake.
Why would I suggest Suk11? I already said why. Can you read? It's back and away from all the smutt and they don't take kindly to sex tourists. In fact, they don't allow these people to stay at their hostel, period. It's just a quaint family place near the skytrain. Based on the OP's budget and requirements, I know of no other decent place other than Suk11. If you don't like my suggestion, I also suggested the master index here on Dave's in the Thailand section. |

If you want to be near the KSR scene, the New Siam Guest House is close to the action, but far enough away to be fairly quiet- it is quite close to the river taxi station. L.P. says that the place is "exceptionally well organized" and I found this to be true the time I stayed there (Reno was full that night!). I'm pretty fussy about noise, and I wasn't bothered and I had a front room on the road.
The Hotel Reno is in the 1000 Bhat range, depending on the room. I like its proximity to MBK Center, which is a very funky 7 story shopping mall with good food and theaters throughout. Great on a 100 degree rainy day. It has a 30 bhat per hour internet cafe on the 7th floor.
If it is your first time to Bangkok, beware the taxi touts at the airport, outside on the ground floor is a public taxi stand for metered taxis. Insist on the meter, and try to find a buddy to ride with you into town to share the cost, which is at least twice what it was at the old airport.
And the new airport is not as bad as the propaganda makes it out to be. It has its problems, but they are not nearly what the politicians make them out to be. It is part of the (deserved) propaganda war against ex-Prime Minister Thaksin. |

| Where is the best area of the city to stay? I'd like to stay near the action but without noise and fear that someone will break into my room and steal my stuff. I'm using 1stopbangkok.com to check for rooms. |

I found wendy house to be really convenient. It's right near national stadium skytrain stop and near siam square, which is a very cool spot. Rooms are basic, but most of the staff were friendly and helpful.

Hotel Reno is quite safe- at least that has been my experience. It has lockers behind the desk, also. White Lodge and A One, both on the same block, have lockers, also.
Wendy's is on that block, also. it is a really convenient location. |

Stay in Silom. Cab up to Khao San Road once, take a walk, take a moment to stop and think "wow, it's like a condensed Itaewon," and then go do something more interesting.
The Malaysia Hotel's in Silom or sort of on the edge of it. It appears to be more secluded than it really is; it's not far from the Lumpini metro station. Here's their website: http://www.malaysiahotelbkk.com/.
I've also stayed at the Plaza Hotel on Surawong, and would stay there again. I stayed at the Trinity (or something similarly named) and would give it a pass; the lobby's attractive but my room was very drab. |

I did get approached by a bisexual male hooker walking back from dinner one night, but I was with a gay guy who had used said hooker's services before, so... |
