The volunteer organization group, primarily made up of foreigners, of Korean's Women's Hotline (KWHL) is having a fundraiser on Sat., May 26 for the construction of a new women's shelter in Seoul. The event will be held at Club TA in Hongdae, starting around 10:30 pm. There will be 3 bands playing for us that night. Tickets are only 10,000 won and the proceeds will go to the shelter.

This is a great cause that will help women who need a safe place to stay. For more information check out the website.

Shouldn�t the word �prevention� be in the title someplace? Without it, sounds like you are raising money to buy cheap liquor and �wife beater� tee-shirts to increase the level of domestic violence.

Good luck with the effort though.

What are you reading? How does a fundraiser for a women's shelter promote "wife beater" or an effort to buy cheap liquor shirts? where are you from?

Wow, I didn't know there was anything like this around, I'm glad to hear there is!

I have to wonder, why is it made up primarily of foreigners? And is it legal? I've heard of volunteer opportunities and fundraisers not being legal before, though I don't really understand why... I would tell everyone I know about it if it is and there was a group like this in Daegu, and I would volunteer too... if I was in Seoul that weekend I would come.

There are Koreans that are volunteers also and it's headed by a Korean woman. There's a lot of foreigners out here that want to be able to do something more than just make money and this is just one organization that offers that kind of opportunity. As far as the illegality of it - of course we looked into it and it pertains to political issues only. We've done a similar fundraiser before that got publicized in newspapers so it's not a problem. Also if people come to the event they're just donating to the cause.

Is this another example of a coutry's problem that it is trying to unload on the people as 'their responsibility' to fix.

You know, I am sure not many people who abuse women would attend a rally to solve that very problem. So as someone who doesn't abuse women, I don't see it as my responsibility to fix it.

This reminds me of the people with collection boxes for 'Save Dokdo'. I always tell them to *beep* off. Government problem, not the people's responsibility to fix.

Your idea of logic makes no sense.
Nobody is asking you to donate your time or your money, nor is anyone asking you to fix anything.
Whilst I'm not involved directly in this organisation, good friends of mine are. I know they put a lot of their own time and effort into what they (and many others) believe to be is a worthy cause.
For a tenner you're getting 3 great bands, reasonably priced drinks, and a really cool venue. All proceeds go to the KWH, you can help make a difference.
If you don't agree with the aims of this organisation, fine. I'm sure it'll be a success without you.
