The meaning is correct although it could probably be phrased better.

I think my English is getting worse! I can't really think of a natural way to say it. I suppose you could just say "Which President was Abraham Lincoln?", but that doesn't really emphasize that you want to know what number he was.

i think it's impossible, as you wrote:

'what number he was' doesn't really make sense in this context.
i'm not saying there's something wrong with your english, but maybe that's the only way to express this phrase in english?
