Hello,
Im am working at a school and I currently dont have any health insurance. My boss is willing to get it for me but it will be 80,000 won a month from my pay check. Are there independent suppliers of insurance who will cover me for less? Any links?
Thanks. |

If you have to pay 80,000 won for your health insurance, you must be making well over 3 million a month. |

It sounds as if the boss is making you pay for the whole thing. Most contracts in Korea specify a 50/50 split of costs between employer and employee. If your contract states this, then let him know you would like to audit the cost. If your contract does not mention any cost sharing, then 80,000 won is about right for monthly health insurance through the national program.

Medical Insurance
The Employer should provide medical insurance for the Employee and agree to cover 50% of the cost. The Employee is responsible for the remaining 50% (as required by Korean Law). The current rate is 2.385% for the Employee and 2.385% for the Employer. This is the Korean Medical Insurance website: Korean:

These are the current rates and monthly payment amounts:

I don't like to jump the gun, but that sounds pretty crooked. You shouldn't have to pay more than say 50,000 won for health insurance in Korea. I never heard of someone paying 80,000 won before. It's a first for me. I could be wrong there, but none of my friends pay that much.
I would call the health insurance people and then if they confirm what we said tell your boss that he made an error and be diplomatic about it as if it was an unintentional error, but expect the health card. |

The health insurance is NOT optional - it is compulsory for us. So you boss actually does not have any choice about it, and neither do you.

Hopefully the OP's boss isn't pulling the ol' "self employed insured" trick. This has happened to several teachers in Korea. |

2,500,000 2.385% each = 59,625 from you and 59,265 from him.
Your boss is not honest. |
