Here's a question:
Many times, when business people invest in another country, they don't necessarily know much about the country itself. Maybe all they see is a hot new product. Maybe they have consultants who explain the culture to them and tell them whether or not it's a good decision. Maybe they just roll the dice.
However, as ESL teachers, living and working in Korea, and with Korean people every day, knowing the culture, labor laws, daily work practices...would *you* invest in a Korean company?

If I could go back ten years ago, I would invest in mirrors. |

LAND...
there's a property I've thought about, knowing what I know about local development projects and direction of growth. |

I would have invested in property and land right after the IMF, and pull out my money last year.
Now: No chance in hell. |

some people seem to believe property and land goes up forever- it doesn't.
anyway sure i would invest in korea. i've done it in the past and usually made money. also, even after the recent run-up, quite a few stocks still look undervalued. |

Many koreans didn't invest in the korean stock market. they believed the endless pessimism of the newspapers and the GNP, Korea's opposition party.
But foreigners invested and they made a lot more money than Koreans. |

KNowing what I know? 3 of the 4 Korean businesses I've worked for have had major problems with employee embezzlement. At the last place, my administrators were so stupid and blatant about it that they were showing up in a new car every day of the week.
I don't invest in Korea because I'm a conservative investor. I don't feel like Korea has the transparency or accountability mechanisms in place to make it a safe enough environment. |

I think right now the smartest country to invest money in would be China. |

China already has it's tycoons. What about Vietnam? I think it just signed a trade deal with the US, might be a good opportunity.
As to the OPs question, Korea has some pretty safe companies to invest in and the KOSPI seems to be performing as well as the Dow. I 'd invest here. How do I get set up? |
