To those of us who live in South Korea, this is old news, but anyway, from today's International Herald Tribune ...

Quote:
In South Korea, the Internet is a path to suicide

From their nondescript sixth-floor office, Kim Hee Joo and five other social workers troll the Internet to combat a disturbing trend in South Korea: people using the Web to trade tips about suicide, and in some cases to form suicide pacts.

"There are so many of them," said Kim, secretary general of the Korea Association for Suicide Prevention, a private group that is dedicated to counseling suicidal people, whose number is rising sharply here.

Meanwhile, the government is taking measures to impede suicide. Since nearly 40 percent of South Koreans who kill themselves do so by drinking pesticides or jumping, the government is considering making pesticides less toxic and is installing more barriers on rooftops and bridges.

Seoul Metro began erecting glass walls on subway platforms after 95 people, some wearing black plastic bags over their heads, threw themselves in front of subway trains in 2003. The government also plans to introduce a video surveillance system with monitors installed in the trains that will allow conductors to check platform conditions before the train enters a station.

It's quite scary...

191 group suicides

Shocked I take it that does NOT include the murder-suicides of men killing their family then themselves, a trend that is evident here as well as back home.

Suicide pacts? Dang, Koreans are so collective that even they can't even die by themselves. Is there anything they do alone?

Group depression you'd think could segue into group therapy!

Laughing Most inappropriate comment. Well done.

I think they like to be alone when they blow their noses, but they have been known to inspect each other's nasal matter as a togetherly after-event.

There are sites for bomb-making too. Doesn't mean people are going to use them.

I think the article is bogus.

It's like saying video games cause school shootings.

I don't think the internet causes people to commit suicide. There are plenty of tall buildings in Seoul. Suicide was a problem before the net was even invented.

Now they can electrocute themselves by touching both the train and the
metal threshhold of the new sliding doors. When my metal cart
connect the two there are always lots of sparks.

I don't think the article says that the internet causes people to commit suicide. It brings together hell bent on commiting suicide and proves them support, information and in some cases the means to do it....

I think it's sad that Korea is going to all this trouble to make it difficult for people to commit suicide instead of trying to study/fix the problem as to WHY these so many Koreans think suicide is their only option.

I know people will say it's indicative of Korean society, but....if you have a problem, you should try and solve the problem - not....(I couldn't even think of an appropriate metaphor to what they're doing).

At the end of the article (first post) it mentions a private group dedicated to helping suicidal Koreans (counselling, etc...). I think that's an attempt at fixing the problem.

Contrastly, we have the ridiculous government solutions (which made me laugh until tears ran down my face):

Quote:

Um...lol...maybe selling razors and knives with dull edges? Um...paving the streets with pillows to prevent jumpers? Yep, that'll fix it

Hmm...what a strange way to try and prevent suicide. They'd better lower the speed limit to 3km/hour then because if the subway's off limits, people are gonna take it to the streets!!!! Shocked

Have a friend who tonight (a little drunk) said that he didn't care if he died young as long as he was married first.

Get with the times, people. For the love of Satan.

This leads us to conclude that tools commit suicide.

When's the big leap?

Um, I think this qualifies as the :"Most inappropriate comment" ... but I sort of think you were trying for that.

Um, you were, right?
