Something about this I just find extremely disrespectful and disturbing.
But maybe she just wanted to be pious and is doing it for the sake of multiculturalism...of course, out of her own free will?

COPENHAGEN, Denmark - The Little Mermaid statue in Denmark's capital was found draped in a Muslim dress and head scarf Sunday morning. Police removed the clothing after a telephone caller reported it, spokesman Jorgen Thomsen said.
The statue sculpted in tribute to author Hans Christian Andersen draws about 1 million visitors a year and is targeted occasionally by vandals. On Tuesday, the statue's face, left arm and lap were found doused with red paint.
In 2004, someone put a burqa, the head-to-toe Islamic robe, on the statue, along with a sign questioning Turkey's bid to join the European Union.
The bronze statue by Edvard Eriksen has sat on a rock in Copenhagen harbor since 1913. |
I reckon this is another chance to meet with Muslim 'leaders' and have a 'tolerance symosium'. |

I found it to be weird but it's cheaper to get rid of the veil than it is to get rid of the paint.
Some people are douchebags....
I could only imagine what would happen to the Statue of Liberty if people had easy access to it..... |

I don't think it was Muslims who did it. And I think you know this, CC. So, your real point is...? |

Similar things have happened in Australia with Aboriginal monuments (and you know there's easy access to be had there) being desecrated.
Eddie Mabo, the man who played a significant role in getting terra nullius overturned in the Australian high court, had his grave decorated with swastikas the day after the formal unveiling of his tombstone. Tasteful.
In Perth the Aboriginal resistance fighter Yagan, who had his head sent to England as an "anthropological curiousity" after being shot by a settler, had his statue beheaded by vandals within a week of his actual head being returned for burial.
There are jerks everywhere. |

It could be very well a Dane who did that who doesn't want Muslims in Denmark and the burqa on the mermaid is supposed to be symbolic, so I highly doubt it was in the name of multi-culturalism. It was done for the opposite reason, I am sure. |

Given that last time around...

...it seems likely this is an anti-Muslim gesture as well. |

As long as we're just talking about placing a removable item of clothing over the statue, I don't see this as being much different than the supposedly offensive cartoons about Muhammed. I mean, free speech and all.

What I find a little odd is the way that you talk about a statue as if it's an actual person. Let's be honest here: The Little Mermaid isn't even a religious or political figure; she's a character from a 19th Century children's book.
And on that subject: if someone put a veil on a statue of Betty Rubble at the Bedrock Theme Park in Black Hills South Dakota, do you think anyone would be discussing it in Europe?

Not entirely. I posted my displeasure with something that happened and then got on with my life. No rallies, death threats, or beheadings- so yeah...much different- not in the content, but in the response.
To me- it doesn't much matter who did it- what I feared was another Muslim pander-fest, regardless of who was to blame.
And yes RTeacher, I do think the Little Mermaid is more worthy of my respect than Jesus or whatever Monkey God you are bowing down to these days...at least her story was entertaining. Plus, I never had to give her 10% of my salary for appeasement. |
