How easy is it to backpack through Asia centered in S. Korea? From what I've read the best way is to go through travel agencies. Trains are pretty much off limits for US citizens I'd imagine despite the opening of the rail line between the North and the South. I am led to believe that flights are the only way to travel (several day boat journies aren't for me). so should i just assume that if i ever want to travel internationally, I should consult a reputable travel agency. Also, what Asian countries require visas? Thanks if anyone can help. |

It doesn't matter who you are, you can't take the train out of this country. Those trains to North Korea were pretty much just showing that they could do it, they weren't actually going anywhere. |

Visa russia china vietnam india no go burma
little hassle - thai cambodia laos japan taiwan
Russia visa looks complicated but it gets done, chinese change alot and usually offer the shortest and most costly. There is supposed to be a 30 day unlimited but at the consulate they were only offering 7 day transit visa at $150.
there are ferry trips from Japan to Taiwan and japan to russia. |

I wouldn't backpack centered in Korea. International flights are quite expensive from here and ground transport is impossible (except for ferries to Japan, China, and Russia). Is there a reason why you want to use Korea as your base? |
