[quote="Beej"]If we are talking about Britain dont forget: rampant classism, lack of upward mobilty, a festering domestic muslim problem, a feisty Scotland with visions of secession, atrocious transport and a crumbling infrastructure, racism equal or more than that of the USA. It was one of Britains top funny men who said " Americans are better looking and richer than us, but funnier? Sadly they are funnier now as well."
each to their own, not all brits are stuck up. it also depends what part they come from, i live pretty much in the heart of London and things are pretty diverse here. As for the racism comment, well there are racist people in the UK and in America but you just have to accept that some peope are and will always be narrow minded shits and get on with life the best you can! |

Christ almighty, when are you lot gonna get it through your thick skulls that Demi is about as British as Kimchi?
The guy cites the NHS and says it's free. Everyone in the entire world knows that it's not free and there are indeed no such thing as free state-owned things. The NHS is paid for via taxation....well, National Insurance actually, but it's exactly the same as tax....and it's something like 7% or 9% on top of the 22% in income tax (and other taxes - local taxes, for example) which most Britons pay.
Demi's spelling and powers of articulation appear to have improved drastically. The guy's a troll attempting to stir up tensions between Americans and Britons probably on the basis that he's from a crap country and doesn't like either, is very fortunate to be entitled to the same oxygen as Britons and Americans and basically is a rather sad individual. |

I don't people understand why these threads get so heated. Let me apply an anology most people would understand...
I can say my mother is a horrible wench.
You can not say my mother is a horrible wench.
No matter how enlightened people from developed countries pretend to be, there is always a thread of nationalism in our souls/minds/whatever, as we were raised as small children by the public school system to believe this.
At least it's true in the US, and I would assume the same is true in GB.
Why can't we just have fun with these threads? Treat it like the Dozens and not take it too personal.
IE...
Your Queen Momma is so fat, when she sits around Buckingham Palace, she REALLY sits around Buckingham Palace. |

If you cite your health care system as a pro over America, then how do you compare to Canada? Sure, we have the same problems as you do, but most are to a lesser degree.

Recently there's been a couple 'bash the brits' threads where no one really came up with any remotely decent attacks on us. Most of it was based on silly things about the language differences between American English and proper English.
The reason the attempts failed were basically because America doesn't really have anything over us. Let's be honest. We're both rich countries, we both have excellent universities and education systems, we both have high crime rates, we both have a high percentage of our citizens living below the poverty line, etc etc.
However, something we have over the US, and I believe it to be an extremely important advantage, is the NHS. For all the criticism us Brits launch at the NHS we know we are so lucky! So many people around the world (USA included) wish they had it.
We break legs, sever fingers, get sick etc and can rely on the NHS to fix it for FREE! The service might be slow but that leg will get plastered up for free. That body part you f'd up will get seen to for FREE. You won't have to take out loans and pay thousands of dollars for operations. Imagine having to do that! Damn that must destroy famalies. One day everythings ok and the next you have sell everything you own to get your daughters legs fixed!
This clip from Michael Moore's new doc. is just one example of what we all know. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFUtAaeYxno
So come on you Brits. Smile and be thankful. They're so jealous of what we've got. Blair was terrible, but he was right when he said "this is the greatest nation on Earth." |

i don't understand why people like to brag about their country. even if your country is so great, it's not a reflection on you... like all these stupid manchester united fans from essex or china, they feel great when rooney scores a goal. why?
by the way my teeth are pretty nice |

America doesn't have anything over you? And if you asked most people in the world who America's best ever colony is the answer would be ___________?
BTW, you both have a few of the best universities in the world and a great deal of the worst. The only big difference in this area is that American unis have $$$$$$$. As I wrote to the registrar at St Cross College, 'Thank-you very much for your offer and I shall enjoy visiting your university's research facilities with the grants that will be available to me in the United States'. |

Agreed. |

This thread is the reason why most of you on this forum deserve to be taken away and shot, or at the very least committed to a mental health facility. Honestly, both places are fine and this petty squabbling and oneupmanship just makes you look like the bunch of mental protozoa you all are. |

It seems I made the point. Almost everyone came on here posting about ridiculous stereotypes and comments about which country has better looking women. Come on people, you can do better than that.
Spinoza seems to be playing that ignorant card. Paying 8% national insurance tax and being taken care of god forbid something terrible happens is a better deal than having to pay thousands should an incident occur. Spinoza, discuss this seriously.
"The American middle class is solid and secure and prosperous -- we are unlike anything ever known in history -- yet American families live just one illness or accident away from complete financial collapse."
"It was very unlikely 30 years ago that an ordinary family could run up a half-million dollar medical bill, yet today that can happen in a matter of weeks in a major medical centre."
Spinoza....have you ever been faced with medical bills that forced you to take out massive loans or sacrifice your life savings? How can you compare the 8% tax we pay to the astronomical bills famalies are faced with in the USA. Do you honestly feel that most Americans wouldn't prefer to have the NHS than the system they've got?
As for the comments about our teeth. Where do you guys get that from? No one in Europe has that stereotype about us. Well, not in western Europe anyway.
Oh, and our women. Ridiculous. Granted I've only spent a short time in America, but from what I saw about 50% of your women are just plain fat! |

| Let's see....a few alleged yank stereotypes...................stupid (according to some actually braindead), arrogant, rude, obese (obviously), loud, obnoxious, racist, meglomaniacal, obssessed with plastic surgery, psychiatrists and guns, still don't understand the right to bear arms relates to a coat of arms and not guns, an inability to realise thy don't have to pay taxes, an inability to realise why most people hate them, etc, etc....that's what some people believe. |
