I've heard "local side" used to descibe the "countryside". Maybe your student is trying to describe a small town in the countryside? My guess. |

Maybe a city nearby? I'm amazed by some of the phrases students come up with. One of my kids likes to describe his day as "deluxe fine." |

That's fantastic!
I'll describe myself as such from now on.
I'm deluxe fine!
I could imagine that becoming a Konglish phrase I could at least tolerate... |

From the subject I assumed it meant a city that only the locals know about, or one that most foreigners don't frequent.
What's the context? |

Maybe they mean a -dong or -gu? You know not a real city, but a city within a city... a local city? It's a stretch, but i've seen korean-english dictionaries come up with much worse! |

I think they mean the main urbanized part of a city or county. Most cities (outside of the major cities) in Korea are basically rural areas that are grouped together by population and historical reasons. Within that area is usually one large urbanized town area and the other areas being very, very small towns and villages. Some places might have their two largest towns being roughly similar sizes. But in most cases, when some says "local city", they probably mean the main town (ex. county seat) in that area. |
