What is the going rate for a private lesson these days? A teacher from my public school wants me to tutor her two boys, but my co-teacher offered the contract O.T rate. I told I needed to think about it, but I'm not doing it for that little money, but I also don't want to look like a di*k by saying, "um no, that's not enough, pay me this..."
I was thinking between 30-40,000 a class.
Now, if I don't want to do it, how do I handle this correctly? Just say no thanks, too much on my plate, or just say no thanks and leave it at that? |

You've got 2 issues. 1 - do you have the correct visa for private tutoring? if not, I wouldn't even bother to teach other teachers' children. Pretty soon every Park and Lee will know that you're teaching privately, and it would only be a matter of time before someone found out you're doing it illegally.
2 - can you teach them in the school? if so, then i think you may be allowed to do this legally, though I wouldn't do it for 20k/hr or whatever the standard PS contract states for OT. The normal rate for most private tutoring is 30-50k/hr, though for 50k, I think you should either have some experience or be providing supplementary material for your student. I think 50k/hr for only conversation is a bit much. |

My OT rate is 20,000. When talking with my CT, she gave me the choice between doing it here at school, or elsewhere. I'm not set up for the private lesson; I've only got an E-2. But what's the switch with doing it at the school that makes it legit? |

I think the poster was suggesting that the school make it a "regular class with a limited number of students". That way, as it is through the school, your technically not teaching private lesson, but an overtime class. Not quite sure if it makes it completely legal, but I'd think it would protect you a bit. The only problem is that you would probably only be offered your OT rate in this case. Try to bargain them up a bit. |

I would not teach any of Korean teacher's children at my school.
You're just asking for trouble. |
