I too wasn't sure why Pest2 had highlighted "candy" in my "these are a few of my favourite things" post. Reading his comment, I thought maybe I'd made a singular/plural mistake (i.e., it should have been "candies") and that was a dead giveaway of my ESL-learner status. But thanks to native-speaker Qin's explanation, my confidence has been restored. whew.

Complete money pits

Indeed they are. Not owning a car here was the great money-saver for me for such a long time, though it was less calculated forebearance than simply accepting the reality that I couldn't afford one. The purchase price, the taxes, the insurance, the fuel, and the upkeep was all beyond my ability. I'm sure if I'd had the luxury of an employer who paid for my housing I could have managed it. But in hindsight I'm glad I didn't and thankful that I didn't really need a car. The extra savings went to smart places, like copious drinks w/bosom friends, fancy dinners w/soft-bosomed women, and some sorely needed wardrobe upgrades for da Guru. And stocks. Oh and also, at long last, Curtains! for the windows and Carpets! for the floors -- a long-overdue return to civilisation after living like a camped-out gypsy vagabond for nearly half a decade. Having guests ask "Guru, did you just move in, or are you just about to move out?" gets really old after the first 100 times.

The pater has always driven top-of-the-line Audis, but each of them 1- or 2-years-used models when he bought them (from his own company). So my family rode in considerable style for 2/3rds or less the cost. He learnt this trick from Grovater Guru, so I would conclude that my thrifty streak re: automobiles is hereditary.

Social critique extraordinaire.

Is he an English teacher???

What was the name of that troll guy who used to hang around and write the really long diatribes--the one who had "1" and "2" incarnations? I think he started with a "p" too. Not saying this is he, just reminded me of him for some reason.

What the hell is your question meant to be relevant to?

Candy is emphasized, so I assume he meant that candy is an invaluable resource to teachers in Korea. If that's true, I really believe pest2 should ask the same question of himself.

Why do I need to ask myself if Im an English teacher?

You responded to his obviously humorous post as though it were serious, so my question implies you, with your dubious reading skillz, are not fit to teach the language you seem struggling to grasp. Don't worry, though--I'm just teasing you. Very Happy (smilies make it all okay)

I agree. This MCSM character is all blabber and no vagina.

Dedicating your time to causes that will never be resolved e.g. environmental causes, mid-east peace etc... That BS saying, "if you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything," is a load of cr@p.

The statement may be a platitude but it's clear many causes can be resolved or improved by participation. Women now vote, for example.

lighters are truly a waste of money ... damnit! i miss those free book of matches they give out with cigs ... the amount of lighters i have in my house are constant reminders of unnecessary purchasing ... it's not the 300 won that's annoying but rather 300 won x 20 or so lighters that add up ... and i constantly leave the lighters in my house so i buy another atleast once a week ... thank god they are only 300 won each ...

mindmetoo who is that on your avatar??

True story an american contractor buddy of mine and me went to a noraebang and ordered 2 agasshi to sing with us for an hour, he paid 100 000, after he struck out at the noraebang i told him to go to this vip club which was just a pimped out noreabang room but cost 550 000 won for the two of us, on him....after he struck out with the two agasshi in the VIP club, we met two other agasshi who ran a bar not far from where i lived, so....drinks in there amounted to about another 100 000, all up he forked out 750 000 won that night on booze and chicks and didn't come close to getting his end away. Amazingly, he didn't blink an eye at dropping all that cash, and flat out rejected an approaches of me to contribute towards the cost, he did however accept a 3 500 won dongasu breakfast from me.

I miss that dude.

Yeah. Room salon nights might be the least value for money experience in Korea. 150,000 for a bottle of Dimple whiskey?? Yes please!! 80,000 won for a plate of fruit? Yes please!!! Disinterested 30-something girls who pour you more Dimple whiskey?? Yes please!! Total bill.......?.......about 2 weeks wages.

Of course, it always seems to be somebody else who pays for it, but still, wives who are jealous about what their husbands might be doing at room salons need never fear. It's most often a lame experience. Unless their husband is paying!!
