I understand while that topic was locked, but there was an important point made on the issue of informers.

That there are informers is not in doubt. Who they are can be illusive. As a result, I think we all need to be aware and cautious.

People who inform to the "authorities" do so for a number of reasons. AND I think that the reason is important in the value of the act.

are just a few reasons why a person might act as an informer.

The problem is that here in Korea, an informer can really hurt someone who is innocent because once accused here, it appears that it doesn't matter if you are guilty or innocent. You will be judged. You will lose your reputation.,

You may be fired, fined or deported, just on the strength of the accusation.

SO, for my part, if I saw an act of murder or rape, or something that was harming another human being, I would NOT hesitate to call the cops. BUT if I suspected another person of teaching illegally, I guess it would take an awful lot of clear evidence for me to even consider turning them over to the authorities.

I would never inform unless I had witnessed someone commit a real crime. Teaching illegaly whilst against the law doesn't hurt anyone.

I was sharing an apartment, supplied be my employer. The first time I came home and smelled weed, I told myself it was my imagination. The second time I knew it wasn't my imagination. The sob was also on a tourist visa.

I gave the sob a choice and a promise that if I smelled it again I would rat him out for illegal teaching, if he gave me any static it would be for the pot. Does the "name" TJ ring any bells?

I have no problem with people teaching illegally. My problem is crappy teachers. If there were a REALLY crappy teacher who was here illegally, i'd probably a) tell them to leave b) warn them to leave and that's it.

I might squeal on someone teaching without a degree, but I'd also have to strongly dislike the person and consider her a bad teacher.

I've known people who break all those rules, plus drug charges/other crimes.

The only reason to turn someone in is spite really. Other than that, who cares?

Informers are the lowest form of scum. It's one thing to cooperate with an investigation, but it's quite another to try and get someone busted.

If you have a problem with someone, handle it like a man (or woman) and not a rat.

The Italian "organizations" have it right when it comes to informants.

Usually, informants are people that have their own skeletons..
