Cable TV Networks Under Probe
By Ryu Jin
Staff Reporter
The Fair Trade Commission (FTC) has been investigating local cable television networks since the end of last year to find out if they unfairly raised subscription fees, according to the antitrust regulator and industry sources Monday.
The investigation came at a time when cable TV networks have become the target of public grievances. An increasing number of customers have filed petitions against them over fees and programming.
The FTC this time focused on some illicit means of raising fees through redesigning packages. Some operators, for example, forced subscribers to choose expensive packages by removing popular channels that had previously been included in cheap packages, thereby profiting from an indirect fee increase. |
Seems this is exactly what they did with CNN. I doubt anything will change in short order. |

I HATE my cable company. I get no CNN, no BBC, no SKY, nothing. The only good channels I ever watch are OCN and some other movie channels. To get CNN or BBC Id have to pay extra. |

I get cable and internet from a company called CNM. They pulled this same move. No more CNN. This really irked me, as I like to watch the news, and am not particularly fond of the Milatary news. I was paying a total of 34,000 won for both cable and internet.
In order for me to get CNN back, I had to subscribe to digital tv. However, now I get a few more channels, ie. CNN, NBCnews, BBC world, Australia network and a couple more movie channels. Now my cable and internet bill is about 42,000 won. I am not terribly upset, although I was bothered a little. |

Mindmetoo,
If you follow your logic in another thread, you should not wait for the press or the government to solve your CNN problem. You, personally, should do something about it. How about a protest outside the cable offices? Or, maybe better yet, you should just yap about it on Dave's ESL Cafe?
You could always just go back home. Everyday, 24 hours a day, you could watch all the cable news you wanted. Wouldn't that be swell?
You entered into that agreement with the cable company with your own freewill. Now, you have to live with it. They have the right to do business on their terms. If you do not like it, form your own cable company.
Why don't you just watch CNN or otherwise get your news on the internet like everyone else. Problem solved.
You seem like basically a good guy but man did I find you anoying on that Salary thread. What's up? |

The cable company did this to me about a year ago too. When I first signed up I was getting CNN and other good English channels, then after a few months they changed their programming and I lost the channels that I usually watched. They wanted almost double the money for me to get them back, so I only have the basic package. I don't bother watching the crap Korean news. The internet is my news provider now. |
