Anyone ever done a fast before? cleanse?

I'm not convinced it's going to be very easy. I loooooooooove food. It doesn't even have to be bad junk food (even if it is preferable).

I started this cleanse (it's actually a body/colon cleanse) today....I'm pretty hungry but I understand that tomorrow feelings of hunger subside. Experienc?E

Anyone else have any fasting/cleansing stories? I'll take pictures of my poo and post them here if y'all are interested. Laughing

I've fasted a few times, the longest being a week. Prior to the fast, I had been working and going to college (both full time) and using that as an excuse to eat fast food almost exclusively. I had gained a lot of weight, some nasty-looking weight I'll add, and decided to put an end to the madness. It was cleansing, as you are doing. After the fast, I abandoned fast food and most processed foods, going mostly for fresh vegetables and meat, legumes, etc.

It is a lot like quitting cigarettes, in that the cravings and pains last about a day or two. Are you doing a complete fast, as in only water, or are you allowing yourself to take in other drinks?

Let me offer a couple suggestions to make things smoother.

1. If you are allowing yourself beverages, avoid anything acidic, such as orange juice or coffee.

2. Don't take any vitamins or other pills. As there is no food for it to digest with, it can upset your stomach.

3. Find an activity to replace eating. It should take as long or longer than the entire eating ritual (prep time, eating, cleanup). My recommendation is meditation.

4. Be careful not to exert yourself too much.

5. When coming off the fast, do not return to normal eating levels. You should come off it incrementally, starting off small.

6. Of course, try not to think about it, or about food. Just try to put it out of your mind.

Hope you found it as helpful as I have in the past.

How long are you fasting for? I've done some 3-5 day water fasts before. In my case, the first 2 days were really tough. You're right, though.....by the 3rd day, my hunger subsided. Honestly, I felt like a million bucks when I finished. I think it does clean all the garbage out of your system. I've never tried anything longer than that. I'd be too worried about feeling weak if I tried to push it up to a week or more.

i usually fast once, sometimes twice a year. there's a lot of well, pollution in everything everywhere, but especially here...
question...are you are your own and working while you do this or do you have time off?

During a cleanse, I eat raw fruits and veggies only. But no nightshades...that's all peppers cept for black, tomatoes, eggplants..

if your fast liquid only, are you drinking juices and stuff or that lemonadey concoction only? during the liquid fast you should supplement with some psyllium so that your body can move toxins from the intestines faster. and somebody said no coffee...def. no coffee.

are you getting colonics?

day 1 you are hungry hungry hippo, day 2 you are tired and maybe hungry (you may totally hit a wall at the end of this day), day 3 should bring you back to feeling yourself if a bit light at times, after that it's variable depending on what your body has accumulated. some great days some not so great ones. sometimes you even feel sick but it's okay, don't give up!

doesn't fasting mess up your body ... can't you get crazy ulcers from doing this stuff too often??? if you wanna cleanse your body couldn't you do it by eating healthy as opposed to eating crap and fasting for a few days?

i have a detoxifying herb supplement as well a set of herbs (containing psyllium) that gets poop moving.

My fast is apple juice...i don't drink coffee...no booze=no problem. NO food.

It's only 5 days but depending on how i feel etc.... i may extend it though i won't shorten it. I started today because I knew day two would be rough (and day 2 being a holiday, just works out you know?) Otherwise, it's normal work.

My wife pressured me thinking that today was "too soon" because i didn't do enough "preperation" for this fast. I think i did sufficient amounts.

Day 1: pangs of hunger but not nearly as bad as i thought it was going to be.

no colonics.

Thanks everyone for the posts and the info. Nice to see i'm not the only new age hippy weirdo on here.
That said though, I really am beginning to think that fasts cleanse.

Well, the way I was told about it goes like this: given the shape of your intestinal tract, matter is bound to build up on the far corners as it goes around the curves. This is the reason bran makes you crap, btw, because it scrapes that stuff off. But when you fast, all this gunk caught up on the edges of your intestines comes out. That's why when you fast you get some really freaky dumps.

To ensure a healthy digestive system, the key is to maintain a healthy diet (with plenty of bran Wink ) after the fast. Generally, afaik, 5 days is when the real nastiness starts to come out. 7-10 days will do it for sure.

edit: that should read fiber, not bran.

Khyber, your wife may be right, but you haven't told us what you did in preparation so it's hard to tell. Before I fast, I reduce my eating for a week to very low levels, gradually, avoiding meat and processed foods.

that's good... get all that crap out of your system but wut about ulcers and stomach pains ... they can be permanent ... i know some people around my age (late 20's) with ulcers ... stress from not eating right and starving themselves ... from the looks of wut they go through, ulcers are really painful and dehabilitating ... aren't you promoting ulcer by fasting frequently? otherwise, i might do some fasting myself ... get all the crap outta my system ... just worried about ulcers and other permanent side effects ...

The type of fasting the OP is talking about shouldn't cause ulcers.

It's when you regularly fast for long periods during the day (as in skipping meals) and then eat that you get ulcers.

I've never heard of ulcers from fasting. No one mentioned frequency before you did.

I do believe this is one of those times when Google would come in handy.

I enjoy fasting, that along with treppaning holes in my skull really helps my Qi flow.

Usually I find that a good distraction to the hunger pangs is to take a nice, long Unicorn ride.

As far as I know, ulcers are not permanent. And with my fasting method, you won't get ulcers.

Anyway, I've done a lot of research on fasting. I enjoy 'juice fasting'.

I use a juice extractor, or juicer, and begin a couple of days before the fast by eating raw foods only, then blended foods (fruits and veggies).

Then it's nothing but juice for a couple of weeks. Celery, beets, carrots, herbs, apples, oranges, pineapple, melons, lemons, whatever you can think of...garlic, ginger...etc... Dilute the juice 50/50 with water. You can drink as much as you want. Careful not to over exert yourself during workouts or what have you.

You lose weight while detoxifying the body and cleansing the digestive tract. You don't need a colonic if you're juice fasting (although they can't hurt). An important thing to keep in mind with colonics is making sure you refortify your colon with the proper stuff (most places will give you some pills for this).

I think cleansing a few times a year is essential in Asia, to get all the pollution out of the body. I'm starting a strict juice fast every 3 months or so.

There are tons of recipes online, and you can get a juicer at Emart or Technomart or Costco.
