Okay, so I took a job in Seoul...they started me right away, and were planning on sending me on my visa run in a couple weeks. They had a lot of problems, so I left after 16 days. They paid me, everything was square, so I took off.

I come back to the city I had worked in previously, run into my old boss, and he finds out I told some of the coworkers at my old hagwan about how he beat up this one teacher who worked there. So he tells me that he's going to immigration tomorrow to tell them that I worked illegally at this other hagwan as revenge for me spilling the beans on him.

Then one of the teachers gets off work that night and I meet up with her, and she told me that he wasn't just blowing smoke. He's coming in a little late because he has to stop at immigration on the way into work.

Should I be worried? Or are they going to take this as another hagwan owner ranting about a former teacher? Will I get stopped next time I try to leave the country? What are the likely/possible consequences? I'd like to hear from people that have some experience, if possible.

Unless he can prove you worked illegally, then no worries. However, it seems like he can prove that you bad-mouthed his business. Whether or not that is true, that is a big no-no. You will be in trouble for that if he has proof of it (and it seems that he does).

Tell immigration what? That I worked illegally?

He beat this teacher up like four months ago, and the teacher felt he deserved it (gyopo), so he never said anything and would likely deny it if asked. I'm more worried about what's going to happen to me at this point.

It doesn't matter - even if it is the truth, if you did anything to hurt his business (and he can prove it), you are in big ka ka poo poo - he can take you to court for libel.

Well, my newer hagwan's boss and him were in contact, so he likely has the name of the hagwan.

I bad mouthed his business? This wasn't conjecture. I was present when he beat the guy and I helped pull him off the guy. I can still get in trouble for telling people about it?

If he can prove that by you telling people about it that he lost business, then yes. Sorry to break it to you, but this is life for the foreigner in Korea. Do you have enough money to bail? Even to Vietnam at least? Easiest place to start up if you're low on cash, and decent pay, too.

Can you leave Korea before the crap hits the fan? I would say try and resolve it with your boss, but he is Korean, and if he is pissed at you, might as well try reasoning with an epileptic four-year old. Good luck in any case.

I recommend saying good-bye to the land of the morning calm, and coming to work in Japan. You won't have any of these problems here.

Good advice, if you have the 6000 dollars to get started up there. I too would rather work in Japan, if I could, I would be there in a flash.

Okay, that's a concern for a little further down the road. He's going to immi tomorrow. That is my pressing concern.

IF he can prove I taught illegally, what happens?

If he can prove it, a 2 million won fine, and you'll get deported I guess. Sorry man, but some of these Korean guys are really ruthless and evil. I know.

Word!!!

If Worse-Comes-to-Worse, teach E.F.L. in Osaka, Tokyo, or Sapporo because all these urban areas are way cooler than ANYWHERE in Dae Han Min Guk IMHO.

Well, if Japan is too expensive - get yourself to Vietnam. Vietnam is the hidden secret of making good coin in Asia. You can stay at a guest house, they will only ask you to pay rent at the end of the month. Jobs pay well there, considering how cheap food and everything there is. But Vietnam will drive you nuts; still your cheapest and most viable option though. Hot and easy ladies, too. Of course you can't trust most of them, but hey, better than your current scenario in any case.

And, of course, the beer, local food, and Western food is cheaper and way better than the crap in Korea.

Do I need a visa to go to Vietnam? Is it easy or hard to find a job when you get there? I know nothing, so I'll need info on what to do.

Yeah, you'll need a visa. Fly to Bangkok from Seoul (cheaper than flying to Vietnam in any case), and then get your visa there. But it sounds like your boss is out for blood; don't give him the satisfaction. It is hard to win against a Korean in a dispute like this in any case. And at least Vietnamese girls are easier I guess...
