Next version of Windows to be 'fundamentally different' wrote: |
Future versions of Windows will have to be "fundamentally different" in order to take advantage of multicore processors, according to Ty Carlson of Microsoft.
"You're going to see in excess of 8, 16, 64 and beyond processors on your client computer," said Carlson, director of technical strategy at Microsoft, during a panel discussion at the Future in Review conference. Windows Vista, on the other hand, is "designed to run on 1, 2, maybe 4 processors," he said, referring to the fact that quad-core processors are now available from Intel and are on the way from Advanced Micro Devices.
The problem, as has been noted on many occasions, is that loads of PC applications were programmed with serial processing in mind, meaning that the performance of those applications increased as a chip's clock speed increased. That's not how it works anymore. The chip industy has decided that multiple cores are the best way to keep increasing performance, and that means applications now have to be designed with parallel processing in mind.
Intel and AMD have not confirmed processor plans beyond eight cores, and only in theory at that. Intel has demonstrated an 80-core processor, |

I hope in Vista SP1 they fix that limitation. We'll have 8 core processors well before the Vista replacement come out.
Wouldn't surprise me at all if the next Windows OS raises the minimum specs again so that you can't even use single or dual core processors. |

if it takes another 5 years, it won't be much of an issue. |

well I'm sure they'll change their mind. Unless they are planning on replacing Vista with a new operating system quickly there will be a need for SP1. |

I'm sure new versions of Windows will be different, but how much more different?
It seems like it's in Microsoft's best interest to say their new products will be different from their previous products. Most people don't want to buy something that's not much better than what they already have.
Seems like Vista is not selling very well and MS is starting their marketing strategy very early for the next launch. |

Maybe MS will do like they did with Windows ME.
I remember Win98 came out. Then Win98SE. A couple years later its Windows ME. And maybe a year or 2 after that XP came out.
Its not set in stone that Windows Vista will be the next OS for 5 years. maybe Microsoft will scrap Vista after a year or 2 and launch a new OS.
Thats a BIG, monumental maybe though. Don't quote me on it. the only reason I even mentioned it was because of the Windows ME fiasco. |
