Speculation is tough with Intel cutting prices quickly on relatively new products. They are trying to establish brand loyalty and convert AMD users.

I would guess that an entry-level quad core will cost around 250 initially. It really depends on AMD and what they will bring forward with Barcelona in terms of price and performance. AMD have always been competitive with pricing, as typically it is the only way to compete with Intel in the long-term.

Mainboards have always been similar in pricing, speculatively around 150 for a basic model. RAM is cheap now and its not likely that will change a whole lot.

Graphics will remain the big cost. ATIs next offering will determine future pricing, but its safe to say that entry-level, mainstream DX10 will be around 150, high-end around 550.

There is no doubt that a Core2Duo system will be dirt cheap at that time as well. For a non-gamer or one who doesn't do heavy graphics work or photo editing, that will be a truly sweet time to buy a solid system. Heck, it's already really reasonable, but it will get downright cheap.

The point I am and was trying to make, is that for the OP, yeah, it may be as good a time as any to buy in. The games they want to play are DX9 and not heavy at that. Surfing, MP3s and Word are going to do well on a Core2 and mainstream graphics card. However, now is one of the worst times to build a future-proof system, as software will move along with CPU power. Very soon, a dual-core with 2GB of RAM will be minimum specs.

Building a system in Q3 this year will be far more advantageous to having it age slower and be more flexible along the way. Its not good to assume that upgrading will be a reasonable solution, as the Penryn may have a different socket and as I said before, it is bad business for mainboard producers to offer a BIOS flash to move to a quad core from dual core. Heck, depending on the hardware requirements of quad-core, it may not be possible.

There are better times to buy than others, but no solution is the end of the line. All computers will age relatively quickly; its the nature of technology. However, when a new FAB is visible, a new version of the world's largest API is coming, and the soon to be standard Vista needs loads of power, those are reasons enough to wait.

Hello,
I guess I'll get roughly what was recommended for the cheap amd setup. I've only ever built intel in the past but I'm sure I can figure it out.

Please recommend a good 21" or more LCD for like $250 or under, or kindly direct me to a recent thread / site dealing with the good stuff.

Just go to Yongsan and look around. you should look at your LCd screen before buying it. What happens when you order online, plug it in and there are 3 dead pixels?

I will buy it in person in Yongsan. I just don't know much about LCDs so I want to get some model numbers of what someone who knows more than I do about them would get.
