Thanks all you guys who wrote in about the vietnamese language vs Tagalog.
Now I guess the question is:
If you were going to spend a year in one of these countries teaching, where which would you pick? Why?
Thanks again,

What exactly is your purpose? What things do you like?
For me, if I were to teach ESL, then definetely Vietnam. If I were just hanging out, then the Philippines. |

The money is half decent in Vietnam I have heard. I don;t think you'd make much money teaching English in the Philippines unfortunately.
Both countries are cool though but I think Vietnam is the better teaching gig. |

Yeah I guess for earning money and trying a new place.
Sounds like Vietnam must pay more, I've been told it's nuts too.
Thanks for the input. |

If thats the reason.. then definetely Vietnam.
I've been there a few times.. and love the energy there (although not everyone does).
Where are you considering in Vietnam? Saigon or Hanoi or elsewhere? |

Having been to both for vacations and neither for work, I would choose Vietnam (Saigon) hands down for livelihood, interest, and food. |

Funny. I had an extended stay in Saigon, and was about to cite that as a reason to go to the Phillipines. Not that I have and if Kyrei says Saigon's the winner then I'm never going to Manila. |

The Philippines is great, outside of Manila. Vietnam is gross outside of Saigon (I haven't been to Hanoi). Vietnam is a work-in-progress. I had a great time vacationing there, travelling about, but not backpacking it. Haven't done that yet. Saigon is a great city and there is a lot growing there. Manila is a cesspool. Interesting, if you like to live on the edge, andit is very edgy. |
