What can I do?
I ran adaware and cleaned that crap out.
Ran a full virus scan in safe mode...nothing turned up.
Defragged the hard-drive.
What can I do (other than doing a clean reinstall) to get my performance back up? It's taking too long for programs to load up (itunes, media player etc.) and when multitasking even only a few things there is noticeable lag and slowdown that there shouldn't be. |

Such is life with Windows. Things just get slower and slower every day.
How much free space on the hard drive? As a hard drive fills up, things slow down. That includes non-system files like movies and text documents. Cleaning it all up with a backup and delete will do a lot for performance. Also, small files are a big slowdown. If you have piles of digital photos, MP3s, Word docs, etc, this will cause a system slowdown as Windows constantly indexes and scans. Lean is the only way to go with Windows; not only with junk files, but all files.
A good registry cleanup will also help. If you install/uninstall a lot of software, the registry gets clogged up. It can first be cleaned, then compacted.
It is well known that the Windows defragger is adequate at best. Executive Software Diskkeeper is the go. In tests it beats every other defrag tool out there and noticeably speeds up load times. Not paid to say this, but it has worked for me for years. |
