By her own grandson, no less. This is very shocking stuff especially in Korea where murder is much less common than my home country. One thing is the same as back home though -- the rush to blame violent video games and movies.

Read all about it at Korea Beat.

Quote:
The grandmother, Ms. Choi (68), was found shot to death yesterday at about 1:50 pm in her home in Busanjin-gu, Buam-dong, in Busan. At the time of discovery her body was under the covers in bed, with one part burned, and one of the bodys hands had been mutilated.

One day after the very first day of the police investigation, today, the 26th, it was announced that the suspect caught was none other the middle school grandchild A (15).

The reason for the murder was that on the 23rd the boy was scolded after returning from having run away from home for a week.

...

Though not caught because of this, but police have determined that he had come up with all these ideas from the games and movies he was
exposed to.

I wonder how they determined that.

funny thing is that, if adult did same crime and if it's really due to the video game, media will not say the crime was affected by video game.
but if boys do some crimes and even if it is not mostly affected by video game, if the boy just says one sentence that they saw something on video game or movie, then media says that the crime is affected by those things.

there are lots of video games you can kill virtual enemies as you know, and usually those video games are imported from japan.
but there are no video game which shows some kids kill their grandmothers.
if there is one, korea will kill the seller.

It is possible to legally own a handgun if you are a member of a shooting club. I was told (though I didn't do enough research) that shooting clubs are basically clubs formed by the wealthy for the wealthy; they are essentially much like country clubs--they have very, very pricey yearly member dues, and unless you are elite law enforcement, this is the only other way to legally own a gun in Korea. Guns are playthings for the rich and powerful.

The Hanwha chaebol CEO who is being indicted for assaulting the bar employees who hassled his boy legally owns several firearms at one of these shooting clubs. This is being investigated as well.

Well...Considering this quote from the Korea beat translation

Quote:
It was revealed that A had been living with his grandmother on welfare since his father disappeared seven years ago and never sent word.

I'm going to guess that "A" and his unfortunate grandmother weren't members of the elite so I'm extra curious about where he got the gun....

I'd guess with every young man in the army guns go "missing" from time to time.

When I lived in the sticks I heard of several cases of soliders getting mugged for their guns.

Hahahaha....

Not to take away from the tragedy of this topic by going off-topic....I just can't believe this comment. Especially this, "usually those video games are imported from japan."

Korea has a terrible gun culture. Little kids are allowed to play with toy guns like it's nothing...it starts early here...very early. Usually those games are not imported from Japan because Koreans has a big computer game development industry. Japanese tend to go for cute games.

Example, I caught students at a my former elementary school playing a violent game on the computers one day. What did they do in the game? They went around and hacked Japanese people to death.......great.....

I wonder where his "A's" dad is? Maybe grandma was not his first victim.....

OOOOOOOOOOOO Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

That is a VERY interesting question...BUT...I doubt that "A" could have killed his dad when he was what....6 or 7 years old...Where's the mom?

Talk about drama...

Apparently, you've never spent time in a kiddie hogwan - or you'd KNOW what Korean 6/7 years olds are capable of...... Laughing Laughing Just kidding.

Playing devil's advocate, this could be because, in a culture with almost no guns, it IS nothing--- the threat of kids emulating what they do with a real gun doesn't seem plausible to the locals.
